My Dad who is now 88 and lived in Keyes Road ( formerly Alfred Street) told me recently that he remembers the pillar box on the corner of Spa Road opposite the Town Hall being blown up by the IRA in their bombing campaign in London just about when the War started in 1939/1940.

In the background is the Tannery chimney in Alscot Road.

Spa Road South side at the junction with Alscot Road, opposite the Municipal Offices, March 1956. Neckinger behind.

This is one of my grandfather's co-workers; I don't think it is my grandfather, although I have only seen one photo of him. The photo was taken in Thurland Road, with Spa Road behind and Frean Street in the distance.
Nothing in the photo survives - except the two valves in the road, the fire hydrant in the pavement, and - not easy to discern - a square manhole cover in the street halfway towards the street name sign. This cover has 25 small square holes for wooden blocks to match the Edwardian road surface (there were tram lines here before that). About half-an-inch has worn away but the wooden blocks survive - very rare.
Re: Spa Road
I gather this is where the Bermondsey Spa Gardens are .
