Bermondsey Square (Yesterday & Today)

Bermondsey Square as I remember it and when I look at todays picture its unrecognisable. Apart from the old houses in the corner.

But my memories go far even further " Who can remember when the number 1 bus on the short run would terminate and park up in Bermondsey Square"

Hi Joe you are bringing back some memories, yes I do remember the number1 parking
in Bermondsey Square I have not been back to Bermondsey for about 5yrs now since we had to move Mum & Dad into a home a bit nearer to us in Bromley. I lived In 2 Bermondsey Sq 1947-52
My brother was born there. The house was next door to the factory on the corner. I also went to the original Bacon School 1956-60 in Grange Road. Once again joe i say keep the stuff coming its great.

BERMONDSEY ANTIQUE MARKET.
Bermondsey Market (also known as New Caledonian Market and Bermondsey Square Antiques Market) The Caledonian Market moved to its current location in 1950.
What started in 1855 as a place to trade with impunity (ie stolen goods bought here didn't have to be returned) is now the busy weekly Bermondsey Square Market Formerly the site of Bermondsey Abbey.

A BIT DIFFERENT NOW 2015.

Bermondsey Square

1935 picture of Bermondsey Square looking north towards St Mary Magdalen Chuch.

This is a classic picture for all has now been lost, it shows the old roundabout with the railings around
it, the early type of keep left sign on both sides of the roundabout and the exit still open from the north side of the square leading to Abbey Street.

This square was also the terminating point for the number 1 bus on a short journey.

Sorry about the quality of the picture We may ask what have the developers done?

In the old days we had slum clearance. Now we have Regeneration – a great term for planners/developers to wipe clean all traces of history and character from places that they usually care little for. We all know it's just an excuse to gentrify areas and increase their real estate value.

The ironic thing is how few of the buildings or landscapes look better than they did before.

Hi Joe, Great pic of Bermondsey Square its the first I have seen of the full square, As a kid I lived in No2 Bermondsey Square top floor flat from 1947-52 half the square was lost during the war, including the cork factory. In No2 I could stand on the toilet seat and look out the window to watch the trams coming up Tower Bridge road, can still hear the clanking of them trams,
Been on the New trams going to Croydon. Not a patch. Rick

Caledonian Market

Staying in the same area but we moving up to the junction with Bermondsey Street we find what was and supposedly still is the site of the Caledonian Market, opened in May 1949 by the actress Valerie Hobson who we see in picture 3 the market has been here for the last 60 years.

Can anyone tell the furture of the market with all the development in the vicinity if Bermondsety Square? Looks rather bleak to me
