The Blue' relates to the Bermondsey Abbey in Bermondsey St/Abbey St. The Blue Lion is part of the Bermondsey Coat of Arms and is also depicted in the fantastic Blue Lion Statue in the Blue Market Square.
It has also been said that The Blue was named after the Blue Anchor Pub, does anyone know?

Southwark Park Road had been around long before Southwark Park was laid out. Until March 1875 it was called Blue Anchor Road, after the pub on the corner with Blue Anchor Lane.
