Hi Bermbird,
Is the picture of Dunton Bridge a slightly newer picture, seem to remember Iron trelis work on the Bridge, remember as kids we used to wait until a steam train went under the bridge and stick our heads though, what we must have been inhaling was anybody's guess. But were still here.

Dunton Road --Formerly Upper Grange Road
Grange Road Polce Station 1912
Picture Courtesy of Metroplolitan Police Authority

Dunton Road Police Station was unlike most Police Stations of that era it looks like a couple of semi detached houses - but a Police Station it was. It was destroyed in the London Blitz along with the surrounding buildings in the German effort to destroy the Bricklayer's Arms Goods Depot.
After the bombing the area behind the Police Station was turned into a giant EWS tank (Emergency Static Water ) and was hidden from the road by a large mound of earth.
The picture of 1912 shows a dog standing in the doorway and in the front of the building a sign for the Metroplitan Police Ambulance, for at this time if you called an Ambulance the call would be answered by either the Police or Fire Service and it was not untill 1930 that a full Ambulance Service, as we know it, came into being, run by the Local Authority. The Police Station was never opened again and was replced by a Police Public Call Box.
Looking at todays picture several of the original houses remain as does the shop on the corner which was once a Newsagent but now is a Betting Shop. Lynton Road and Willow Walk are to the right
As children, at the end of the war and after, we would explore the bombed houses and sail our small boats on the water tank--- Can anyone else remember this area at this time?

Good photos and notes on Dunton Rd Police station. Did it stand to the left of the houses in your today picture ie where the entrance to the flats are?

In answer to crosby34 position of the Police Station, when the place was destroyed I was in an air raid shelter with my mother and cant remember anyway so I can only go by the map and it would seem it was next to the last house now standing going in the direction of Grange Road from Lynton Road. I am surprised that these houses are still there.

Dunton Road- Railway Bridge

Looking from the Dun Cow end of Dunton Road towards the Railway Bridge. Earl Road sweeps round to the right and out of sight on the left would be Marcia Road, behind us to the right was Georges Fish And Chip Shop, The Hole in the Wall.
On the left at the bottom of the bridge are the wooden gates that led into the Railway Yard.
The Chimney of Youngs Works can be seen in the distance in Grange road.
Does anyone remember the Tea/Coffee wagon that used to stand at the bottom of the bridge this side on the corner of Earl Road and Rolls Road at night
This area has all changed today and has been taken over by Tesco.

Hi fosney
What memories this brings back. The bridge used to be called Greyhound Bridge (the Greyhound pub was on the corner of Dunton Road and Lynton Road, before my time though) I lived in Curtis Street and worked in Old Kent Road, I walked that bridge four times a day, as I used to go home for dinner. Me and my mates had a lot of laughs and a lot of skylarking about on that bridge, we was once stopped by a copper for throwing fireworks at each other while walking home from work. We got a right ear bashing and was told that we were old enough to know better, which of course we were.
Thanks for the pics and the memories.
Linda

I remember the coffee stall on the corner of Dunton Road/Rolls Road, also Georges (hole in the wall), what I would give for Saveloy, Pease Pudding & Chips.
There was a newsagent in Dunton Road opposite Georges called Browns & a Café which we used when I was on the railway but I can’t remember the name. It was owned by either a Greek or Turkish couple, there was also a paper stall outside the Dun Cow. Kiwi

This brings back memories, this is what it was called when I worked on the railway, late 1950s. Every morning pick-up my paper, then into the café to the right for breaky :). I think Browns was run by 'Mick' and Win then, but I could be wrong on that.
