Drummond Road

Picture at the junction with Clements Road looking towards Peak Freans Factory
I believe the flats on the right have now gone replaced by a school, from the old picture it looks as though redevelopment was taking place

Hi fosney,

I think you'll find that the flats on the right hand side of the old photo is actually Scott Liggett school not long after it had been built. As the photo shows no houses to the left this must be after demolition ready for the building of the 'four squares'. The houses were still there but empty/derelict in 1968/9.

Hi Fosney

My Gran lived in a prefab in Drummond Road next door to a corner shop I knew as Italiano's. Not sure if this was the correct name for that shop. I recall an elderly man as the shop owner (anyone over 20 years of age, in the world of an 8 year old, is in the realm of elderly so my apologies if it turns out he was not so old … or Italian!!!).

My Aunt and Uncle lived in a prefab next door but one to my Gran. Their prefab was on the corner of Clements Road and Drummond Road. Looking at your photograph it would seem my Gran and Aunt lived in prefabs that had been on the site that is obscured by the lorry.

Regards
Rene

Hi Jimmika

I agree, it is funny the things that stick in one's mind. I do remember the old man's wife but at the time I thought she was just an employee or possibly a relative i.e. daughter or niece, it didn't occur to me that she was married to him. When she became noticeably pregnant, they both became a topic of conversation and I overheard the 'grown ups' referring to them as a married couple.

Regards
Rene
