Whichelow Leather Merchant and Tannery
Engraving of the George Whichelow Tannery, founded in 1865 just off Tanner Street.
The Company specialised in what were called Glace Goods/Glazed or Glossy light leather often known as "kid leather". At one time the skins often came from Morocco and there is still a Morocco Street in Bermondsey today. By 1920 the Company's address was 82/84 Tanner Street and in 1934 they were still in Tanner Street till their closure in the 1960s. The Company, in its peak, employed some 120 people.
For those who went to Riley Road School, the Works from the picture and old map seem to be opposite the School, as if looking down from the School Building in Riley Road.

Fosney I don't think that the current photo of Riley Road will stay the same for long. I'm sure that whole block is up for redevelopemnt

Re: Riley Road
Thanks crosby34 for the information about redevelopment in the Riley Road area I know freddie is a dab hand with the camera so perhaps we could persuade him to get some picture's of the area before all is lost. I would do it myself but I live in North Lincolnshire
How about it freddie on your next trip to Bermondsey?

I will try and fit Riley Road in for a "shoot", is there anything in particular or just a few general views?
Actually I thought I had walked that block recently but as I cannot find any photographic evidence maybe did it on google streetview or perhaps I just dreamt it!
Regards

Re: Riley Road
Thanks freddie, some general pictures of the area from Riley Road down to Tanner Street would be great with the site of the old Metal Box Company before all is lost forever
Much appreciated

Fosney, I'll be down there myself in a week or so. Put a list together of any streets you want up to date photos of, and I'll try and take some. Weather permiting of course - it is August after all, so it's likely to bucket down.

Hi Joe,
Took a trip up to Bermondsey this morning to photo the old Metal Box site. It appears that only the Tanner Street end of the site is currently up for redevelopment, the 'Tower Workshops' part of the site has only just issued a 5 year rental to one company for premises!
Here's one quick upload, (Tanner St end of Maltby Street) more later (if wanted
