South Africa - 1900-1902 3rd Volunteer Battalion of The Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment and its involvement with the Boer campaign.
They arrived at London Bridge, then marched along Tooley St, Dockhead and Parkers Row, accompanied by their band, before lining up at Spa Road, outside the Town Hall as we see them here. The day before the event, a treaty had formally ended the Boer War, bringing peace.
The Queen’s’ was based at the drill hall that existed up until a couple of years ago on Abbey Street, at the junction with Jamaica Road.

First Boer War was fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881 between Great Britain and the South African Republic. The war resulted in defeat for the British and the second independence of the South African Republic.
The Second Boer War, also known as the Second Anglo-Boer War, the Second Freedom War (Afrikaans) and referred to as the South African War in modern times took place from 11 October 1899 – 31 May 1902. The war was fought between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic(referred to as the Transvaal by the British). After a protracted hard-fought war, the two independent republics lost and were absorbed into the British Empire.

Photo from the first ever Bermondsey Carnival in 1900 The photo was from the first ever Bermondsey Carnival in 1900 Carnival. It is of float number 111 and was described as a "wagonette, decorated" and entitled "England and Ireland" by J. Davis of Jamaica Road. The Bermondsey Carnival was established to raise funds for widows and orphans of the Boer War and many of the floats that took part in that first Bermondsey Carnival took the theme of the war.
