Pocock Family

Postby MissC » Wed Jan 17, 2024 11:39 am

I am researching Henry Arthur Douglas Pocock (nicknamed Bill) and his family.
He served as a W/Op/ Gunner in the RAF during WW II, but was killed when his Plane crashed on a Mission. I was privileged to be able to read letters between him and his Mother, which provided certain insights, but unfortunately due to time, it is difficult to fill in other details, which is why Sites like this one are so important and valuable to Researchers like myself.
The Family would have been well known, as his father Percy F. Pocock (son of Henry Pocock) was either co- owner, or associated with Pocock Barge Builders (also known at one time as Pocock & Stoneham Boat and Barge Builders). The address would have been 24 Rotherhithe Street. I believe the location was bombed during the Blitz. One of his Fathers ancestors another Henry Pocock, did indeed operate The Jolly Waterman Pub, during the 1800s, and was listed as the Publican of the establishment. So it seems the name of Henry Pocock was handed down through several generations.
I did note an earlier Photograph on the Bermondseyboy Site, of the Barge Building Warehouse and mention of Percy Pocock, who I believe would have been one of Henry. Arthur Douglas Pocock’s Brothers. Yes, it gets confusing! There were also several Sisters and all were younger, but were very close to their older Brother. I have the nickname of his steady girlfriend (Plum) who lived with his family for a while and was a close friend to one of the girls. I believe she worked as a Canteen Girl during the Blitz. I would like to find out more about them all.
Hopefully, this may jog a few memories, or perhaps a few more details about the family and the Barge Builders who worked at Pococks.

Correct. This is the Family.
How kind of you to take the time to respond and with some research. Are you related?
I too located his Gravesite, along with certain information regarding The Jolly Waterman - yours is much more in-depth, so I do appreciate your efforts.
I did not have the Baptism dates or Church, so very pleased to obtain.
I did manage to glean copies of a few pages from the last Squadron Logs pertaining to the final Mission, which I gleaned from Military Records.
I am hopeful that I might glean additional photographs or memories regarding Henry and his family, but as I am sure you know, time is now the enemy.
I am enjoying the Site, especially finding my way around certain areas via memories and old photographs. Places frozen in time, that Henry would have walked and observed.
I so appreciate your interest and time.
While, I am not related obviously. I am a former Journalist/Writer and the Letters between Mother and Son, were remarkably open and touching in certain aspects, I am compelled to continue on my journey to learn more about: Henry (aka “Bill”) his siblings, friends and life growing up.

Amended today. It’s wild going through the Census, as one is never quite sure middle initials are correct, with so many Henrys’. It’s easier to do the math! Plus there is confusion regarding the demise of one wife, and change of names, when additional information on relatives and/or change in circumstances occur.
Thank you for catching my egregious error. Percy F. Pocock, a grown young man, of 19 (pushing 20) became the Father of Henry Arthur Douglas Pocock.
Phew!
