We used to go there for the sixpenny mix, vanilla ice cream, lemon ice and strawberry ice . Does anybody remember the shop ?

Didnt it have a little window that you bought the ice-cream from?

Came across this photo and it reminded me when we use to see Policeman on these bikes. They were so slow we use to chase after them up the street, much to the annoyance of the rider! By the time he turned round to tell us off, we had legged it!
They were Velocette LE Motorcycles, the LE stood for Little Engines. Later on they earned the nickname "Noddy Bikes" as the riders could not salute senior ranks whilst riding past them so they just nodded!

Remember seeing the MB logos on the MB trucks coming in and out of the Metal Box factory all day long in Riley Road Bermondsey

I too played on this beach (I didn't know or care what was in the water then). I believe the sand was laid down as part of the Festival of Britain. Barges would regularly top it up as the tide eroded it. Happy days!

Hi Vreagh, as we say happy days on the Tower Bridge Beach. The beach and sand were there way before the Festival of Britain. (1951).
In 1934, Tower Beach was officially opened, King George V decreed that the beach was to be used by the children of London, and that they should be given “free access forever”.
Tower Beach as it was known was created by bringing 1,500 barge loads of sand to the site. It was estimated that 5,000 people a day visited from the beginning, it was such a success in the 1930s, that it was estimated half a million people had used the beach.
Although Tower Beach was closed during the war, normal business resumed in 1946 and was still popular in the 1950s and 1960s. However, in the 1970s there were concerns about the pollution in the river and the beach officially closed in 1971.
I still look at the pictures hoping I might see my mum, sisters, or myself, not happened yet but then I still have my memories. :)
Just a couple of more pictures to remind us of thoses happy times.
