Sherston Place in Bermondsey. By 1900, the living conditions in Bermondsey were awful. There were known examples of nine people living in one room and one tap serving 25 houses with no sanitation. Conditions remained bad well into the 20th century.
Sherston Place was off Newington Butts and was once called Swan Place. At one time Cross Street, later changed to Draper Street and both ran from Walworth Road to Newington Butts. Draper Street was built over in the 1960s by the Elephant and Castle development.
Draper House and Sherston Court are reminders of those earlier years.
