QUEEN ELIZABETH STREET

Postby kiwi » Wed May 03, 2017 9:11 am

George Daniel Payne (1845 – 1927) established a tea and coffee merchants in 1896. The factory was at Queen Elizabeth Street, Tower Bridge, Bermondsey. Not sure when they branched out into Chocolate. In 1929, the Tower Bridge factory burned down and had to be rebuilt. The Tower Bridge site was closed in 1990 and tea processing was relocated to a new site near Doncaster, Yorkshire.

The Flag Store was built in 1899 by Benjamin Edgington, flag and tent manufacturers, now converted into offices and flats (2016) There seem to have been several Edgington’s recorded as tent makers. Benjamin Edgington advertised in the Alpine Journal of 1960 claiming they were “established before 1795” and describing themselves as “By appointment to Her Majesty the Queen; Tent and Flag Makers”.

Cheers Vreagh, like you I used to eat in there, and of course on the rank to load up at the wharfs, fancy forgetting that. Sometimes the light is on, but there is no one at home.

If I am right Joe’s Cafe was on the corner on the right? In c1900 The Crown & Sceptre pub was on the same corner.
