Southwark Park Road

On the corner with Alma Grove was The Rose and Crown Public House in the picture we find it still open.
A far cry from todays picture the pub has closed like many others and looks as though its been turned into flats even the phone box has gone but at least the period houses remain.

Went back to Bermondsey for a day visit last Tuesday, spent several hours walking old haunts but the worse parts for me were seeing The Blue Market. They are laying all new pavements in Southwark Road so they have taken away the trees and the blue seats which used to go around the trees in the market area and have paved it over, it now has no character at all.
Also The Public Library in Spa Road (which I hope the pics come out} is still there as it is a listed building and still looks the same but is no longer the same!

Thank you for posting the pics Milly.

Such a shame our beloved Bermondsey has changed so much.
It's a sign of the times!

You can take the girl out of Bermondsey but you can't take Bermondsey out of the girl!

Hi Milly, great Pic of the Library, do you remember the model of the library that used to stand at the top of the stairs, used to spend hours as a kid looking at that. Rick.

Glovers Court, Blue Anchor Road ----Now Southwark Park Road
J R Atkinson toilet soap and perfumes manufacterer Eonia Works

More or less beside the Youngs factory and hidden away behind the Turks Head Public House, Fort Buildings and a row of terraced hoses opposite the high pavement at the end of Dunton Road was the J R Atkinson factory ( No picture available ) manufacterer of high class perfume and soap.
Founded in 1799 the factory produced high class cosmetic products and had outlets in The City, Bond Street.and Paris and were the winners of 8 awards for its renowed quality products.
After the closure of the factory it was re- allocated to Weybridge in Surrey and later taken over by the German Company Wella but a controlling interest was taken by Procter & Gamble,
In 2007 it was sold to the Italian Company Morris Cosmemtics so the names lives on considering its started in Bermondsey (Advert from 1960s note the price of the lipstick)

The site is now part of the Harris Accademy Playing Fields

Can anyone rememember the factory

Hi Fosney
I do not think I can remember the Atkinsons factory itself, but certainly do remember the Turks Head Public House. I used to drink with my girlfriend later my wife in the little snug bar there.
The Landlord/Lady,there I believe her name was Carrie was a warm and kind hearted individuaI
I am talking here 1963/4, we eventually married and moved away but always have fond memories of that little pub.
Thanks again for all your excellent contributions.
David

David
Regarding the Turks Head Pub as a kid I used to go to that pub for the old lady who lived next door in Southwark Park Road and get her a Jug of Stout in the off licence section of the pub. I think at the time it was about 4d in real money and I would get treated to a bag of Smiths Crisps with the blue salt bag inside for 1d. No ready salted in those days

Do you remember the Smiths Crisps van on the back it had a sign " stop me and buy one" or am I thinking of something else?

Hi Bermondseyboy
Can remember an ice cream man coming round our road shouting out Veronica Lake! (she was a film star). Can also remember an ice cream man who came round the streets being fined for keeping the ice cream in the box under his bed! Never bought ice cream from anyone calling round the streets of Bermondsey again! I believe he sold Eldorado ice cream. Whilst on the subject of Eldorado. The head office for them was in Stamford Street. I can remember one of their employees who must have been a bit simple walking around with a shiny tap on his head. Honest my husband saw his too. Did anyone else ever see him.
