Fair Street
Opposite the Library in Tooley Street stood another iconic building which is now long gone. The Public Institute in Fair Street it stood with the junction of Tooley Street and Artillery Lane the Institutes facilities included a gymnasium Library and large hall.
The drawing of the building is from the Southwark Annual of 1899
The architects being Stock,Page and Stock who had offices in Tooley Street.
To the rear of the Institute in Parish Street stood St Olaves workhouse

Tilbury Place c1939. This ran off Fair Street roughly where St Johns Hall or the Watch House was, and opposite Devon Mansions.
The elderly couple are believed to be the last two inhabitants before demolition, it must have seemed like the end of the world for those who were displaced.
