Ilderton Road

MaxV wrote:Hi I’m new to the site. I lived opposite Bill and Vi’s fish and chip shop on the Ilderton Road. We were often having fish and chips! It was a very busy shop, next to the greyhound track which I went to with my parents. My fathers family were in Lovelinch street and I went to the primary school over the canal bridge in the 1950’s. Sometimes I went to see speedway events at the track.
There was a parade of shops opposite our house and a lady I called aunty Gert had a newsagent/ sweet shop on the end of the line of shops. I remember buying penny sweets…..4 fruit chews for a penny. I think there was a greengrocers called Bettles?
I have many memories of that area and its interesting to be in touch with people who remember the Ilderton Road at that time.
Hi MaxV, Welcome to the site and thanks for your posts. Kiwi.

Picture states, Pilgrims Way School Bus, c1970.
I may be wrong on this, so assuming this is the school off Manor Grove, the road is two wide for Pilgrims or Manor so posted in Ilderton Road.

Hi Ray,
Hope you’re keeping well!
I can confirm the photo with the private bus was taken from right opposite the TV shop I worked at in the Old Kent Road.
The view looking under the newly constructed railway bridge shows the tower blocks of the Tustin Estate and the Rising Sun pub in the distance.
There was a period of time, maybe around 1969? When that section of the OKR was one way, towards New Cross… hence the bus being on the wrong side of the road. This was presumably while the railway bridge was being replaced.
The second hand shop was on the corner of Sharratt Street.
We were spoilt for choice with second hand shops in those days… one on the corner of Wagner Street, the one on the corner of Sharratt Street and two on the bridge!

Hi Brian, nice to hear from you and hope you and the family are all well and thank you for the information.
I was going to say all’s well here but after you pointed out the Rising Sun Pub, I think I need to take a visit to Specsavers for an eye test.
Cheers Ray.

Not sure of the date but it looks a very old picture.
