Borough Road

Borough Road-Borough Polytechnic

Another building known to us all, either in passing or, like myself as a place of further education.
The area has been a seat of learning since 1790 with the opening of Joseph Lancaster school, an example of universal free eduction.
Borough Polytechnic Institute opened in 1892 and with expansion become Polytechnic for the South Bank in 1970, and South Bank Polytechnic in 1987, and then South Bank University in 1992 until being changed to its current name of London South Bank University.

This might be one for fosney. I took this photo today of my mother's prefect badge from Borough Polytechnic Girls' School. You should be able to see the motto "Do it with thy might" either side of the crest.

Can you Joe, or somebody, please tell me whether BPT was somewhere you would go to after you left secondary school? I know it's a university today, which is obviously post-secondary, but would it have been post-secondary in the 1930s?

If she went there post-secondary, then where could she have gone to school in between Keeton's Road and BPT.

When I went to the Borough Poly it was after work for evening classes. I dont quite know where the Girls School was or if it was part of the Poly as we knew it then or we know it today, the badge is quite interesting and I will have to look into that subject a bit more deeper unless any other member can come up with the answer. I suspect it was a further education school like Lewisham Polytechnic as it was known in my day

Fosney, I contacted Southwark Local Studies, and was told my mum would have stayed at Keeton's Road until school leaving at 14 then to go to Borough Poly to learn her dressmaking. I have a photo of her in school uniform age 15. I then contacted LSBU, and they are celebrating their 120th birthday next year, and are interested in my photos.

As you have made contact with L.S.B.U I feel sure we/you will find out about the Prefects badge that you mother was presented with. They might well ask for it to used it in the celebration of the birthday.
I suppose the school uniform was that of the Borough Poly?

Re your comment on the photo of my mum, Yes, the uniform was worn by students of Borough Polytechnic Girls' School. Would be nice if I had a full length photo, but this is all I have.

In the distance is The Victoria Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower in St George's Circus, demolished in the late 1930's to free up traffic movement on the roundabout. This was replaced by the Obelisk that is there now in about 1998.
