CORBETT'S PASSAGE. ROTHERHITHE NEW ROAD.

Postby kiwi » Sat Feb 25, 2017 3:07 am

Corbett’s Passage; a now narrow alley which was once the site of two separate railway stations, both of which have since long vanished.
The first- ‘Commercial Dock Station’ was in service for just 11 years between 1856 and 1867. No trace remains today although it can be spotted on maps from the period:
The second; ‘Southwark Park Station’ opened on the same site in 1902 but faced immediate competition from a number of bus and tram routes which were flourishing locally.

It was opened by the South Eastern and Chatham Railway on 1 October 1902, on approximately the same site as the then long-closed Commercial Dock railway station. It was close to the southern end of Southwark Park station closed on 15 March 1915 due to wartime economies. It did not reopen due to competition from other public transport. The bricked-up remains of the ticket hall are visible from the outside in Corbett’s Passage. The station, apart from being no longer there, does have one lingering claim to fame. The first signal box in the world was built here. What was known as the Corbett’s Lane signal-box, was built here as the London and Croydon Railway (L&CR) joined up with the existing Greenwich railway, necessitating the first major railway junction in the world.

Off Rotherhithe New Road, opposite Raymouth Road and runs into Silwood Street. Many will know it's named after the Canadian murderer, William Corbett, who was hanged on 04-04-1764 for two murders in Cherry Garden Street, Bermondsey, SE1. His body was hung on a gibbet in Rotherhithe New Road (then Deptford Road).
