ORMSIDE STREET,LINES BROS.

Postby kiwi » Mon Feb 20, 2017 12:05 am

Ormside Street was originally called St James Street.
This is an interesting company, in fact a Worldwide company which I had never heard of, let alone of it being in Bermondsey, until I came across the picture below. Lines Bros a new company was registered on 1st May 1919 at Hatcham Works, Ormside Street, Old Kent Road, this was named the Triangtois Works. This was opened by some of the family who originally work for G & J Lines who on their return from the war, and after disagreements over how best to manage G&J Lines set up a new enterprise Lines Bros (1919-1972) in Bermondsey, along the same lines (no pun intended), tricycle horses, stool horses, pole horses, horse and carts and other large wooden toys. They soon gained customers such as London department store Harrods and Harvey Greenacre & Co. Ltd of Durban, South Africa.
Their horses are marked Triang or Triangtois and were made in the traditional manner, not only in their large British factories but also in their Australian and Canadian subsidiaries. They did still work closely with G&J Lines and I believe they came together after 1931 but not too sure of this.

The pub at 41 Ormside is now demolished. Unlike many long gone pubs with wonderful architecture the Baker and Basket...not so much

A word of thanks to Fogbrain for the correct information (Tustin Street Topic).
The Regal can be seen on the other side of Old Kent Road. The tall building is The Rising Sun.

Used to run from the northern side of the Old Kent Road to the Grand Surrey Canal, now only the section from Manor Grove to Record Street remains. 2024.
