The sweet shop in Linsey Street was known as Sheila's when we were there and Chick's before that. The shops opposite us were a greengrocer's run by Ivy who lived at 17 Linsey Street and a grocer's run by Mr and Mrs Parnell who lived at 3 Helen Taylor House behind the lock-up. When we were, slum cleared in 1968 my dad sold the newspaper side of the business to Mr Parnell.
LINDSEY STREET.

Back again. The pics of Linsey Street you have just posted from paperboy the 1963 pic has my mum and my granddaughter aged 2 in 1963 and they are standing next to Parnells Store and the google picture show 2 shops on that site and it looks like from the reddish colour bricks that the modern is the same as the old brickwork. My cousin and I are taking a nostalgic trip back to Bermondsey next month and I will be in Linsey Street to check it out. By the way was the shop on the right called 'Chicks'?

Re: LINDSEY STREET.
It was 'Chick's' until my Dad and Mum took it over. It was renamed 'Sheila's' - my little sister's name. The infant in the pic is my little brother, Ray, on his first birthday in August 1963. His birthday was celebrated amongst other Linsey Street residents on the grass next to Parnell's shop.
Re: LINDSEY STREET.
So .. millylinseyst .. who are the lady and the baby on the right? The back wall is Lipton's factory.

The very same two buildings as were there in the 1960s; both were lock up shops as they are today. At number 20 was the greegrocer's shop (which was run by Ivy who lived almost opposite at number 17) and Parnell's the grocer's shop which was number 22 and the side of which can be seen in the photo. Mr & Mrs Parnell lived at number 4 Helen Taylor House, just behind the shops.
There was an old chap who answered to 'Ted' who lived at number 16. He smoked roll ups of Special Nosegay tobacco. He had a habit of half finishing one as he went to bed at night and the relighting it in the morning when he came over to the shop for his morning Daily Herald. That roll up stank really 'orrible and the shop reeked for hours after he'd gone. We used to keep the door open after his visits, regardless of the weather outside, whether it be snowing or howling a gale!
On the subject of tobacco .. remember the pipe smoked by Mr Murphy, headmaster of Alma school? Stuffed with Bulwark tobacco that was - I can still smell it today as I walk past the school.

Well to say that I am totally blown away by that pic is putting it mildly yes it is me with my daughter at your brothers picnic (the mop of hair gives it away). I showed it my husband who agreed it was me but his comment was 'he did not remember the dress I was wearing' MEN!!!!!!!!!

A question for CaroleAnnFortRoad and MillieLinseyStreet ..
Why was "Chick's" called "Chick's"?
BTW - Sheila was my sister's name and the shop was renamed using her name. My Mum is Mary and she's still around and living in Reverdy Road.
