Dunton Road --Formerly Upper Grange Road
Grange Road Polce Station 1912
Picture Courtesy of Metroplolitan Police Authority
Dunton Road Police Station was unlike most Police Stations of that era it looks like a couple of semi detached houses - but a Police Station it was. It was destroyed in the London Blitz along with the surrounding buildings in the German effort to destroy the Bricklayer's Arms Goods Depot.
After the bombing the area behind the Police Station was turned into a giant EWS tank (Emergency Static Water ) and was hidden from the road by a large mound of earth.
The picture of 1912 shows a dog standing in the doorway and in the front of the building a sign for the Metroplitan Police Ambulance, for at this time if you called an Ambulance the call would be answered by either the Police or Fire Service and it was not untill 1930 that a full Ambulance Service, as we know it, came into being, run by the Local Authority. The Police Station was never opened again and was replced by a Police Public Call Box.
Looking at todays picture several of the original houses remain as does the shop on the corner which was once a Newsagent but now is a Betting Shop. Lynton Road and Willow Walk are to the right
As children, at the end of the war and after, we would explore the bombed houses and sail our small boats on the water tank--- Can anyone else remember this area at this time?
