SPA ROAD to the left. HOVIS IS WHERE THE CAFE WAS.
I think Dibley 47s post was talking about these shops on the left in the picture above?
Dibley 47
On the left the shops were a tailors and next door to that was Reubens a newsagent/sweet shop and next to that was the pub which was on the corner of Canon Murnane Road, which was named after Canon Murnane who was a priest at St. Joseph's Church at Dockhead. The houses in that road were severely damaged by the war and virtually left untouched for many years after, because myself and friends found a skeleton there. I must have been about 7 or 8 at the time which would have been circa 1955.

As I walked from Abbey Street to Boutcher School. I used to pass the sweet shop at the corner of Spa Rd and Grange Rd - in the centre of the photo. I remember when the UK moved to decimalisation - the old lady and her son who ran the shop could not get their heads around conversion from old to new. Great - walk in the shop, buy 2d of sweets and walk out with more money than I went in with.

Another one from the 70s (I think). This is Grange Rd looking south with Spa Rd the turning on the left. I may well have posted this before but not in the then and now section. Fosney are you ok about digging out the up to date views?

The B. Young & Co Ltd factory was in Grange Road, established in 1884 they produced Gelatine but later acquired the Glue & Size works in Spa Road from Procter and Bevington.
Locally known as the "glue factory" because of the pungent smell emitted from the works the fact is that glue production had ceased in 1900.
In 1926 the Company became part of British Glue & Chemical, and the works closed in 1981 and in 1982 the land was sold for redevelopment.

Hi Joe every time you post a Pic it brings back memories, Remember walking past that and never giving it much thought, Though as a older teenager that might have been because of coming back from the Wellington P/H (later the Henry Cooper) after a few pints and eating a Pie & chips from the Hole in the wall. If I tried that now be up all night with indigestion. Rick

Grange Road - The Solarium
When I was a child the Bermondsey Health Centre was known as the Solarium.
Opened in 1929 it was the first health centre of its kind in the UK and had a Solarium on the roof.
The front glass corners to the right of the building is where the dentist used to practice. I remember in the 1960s the Health Centre treated the population on mass with Polio jabs
Have you any experiences about visiting this building?
