Tooley Street fire began at Wilson’s Wharf – now the home of Southwark Crown Court - on Battle Bridge Lane on 10th August 1971. The fire had raged through the night. Eight firemen were injured in the blaze, London's biggest since the Second World War.

This is what was there in c1921. Battle Bridge Lane & Duke of Clarence left, both out of the picture.
English Ground formerly Bull Court is the Archway. Number 85 in the picture far right in 1986 was Clarkair International travel agents, this also looks like a newer building.

Tower Bridge Nick as we would call it in the 50s & 60s, boy does this bring back some memories. ;) I can remember a lady Magistrate there but just cannot remember her name. If you came up against her you were not going to get off lightly but looking back, she was probable right. Pity there is not more like her around today, instead of pussy footing around like they do now.

If I remember correctly, the lady magistrate was called Sybil Campbell and put fear into any tearaway up before her. One guy who lived in our block [a docker] was caught in a gate search and was in possession of ONE pair of stockings and Sybil sent him to prison for 90 days. Also, my brother in law was collecting fruit and veg in the Boro market when 2 police officers accused him of knocking a cyclist from his bike. The cyclist couldn't identify who it was only that part of the vehicle was red. My B/L 's was the first red lorry the y saw so nicked him. At the Bridge, they said that they actually witnessed the event and therefore charged him, even though the cyclist was still saying that he wasn't sure. Sybil said that the position that officers claimed to have stood at , she knew very well and in that position they could NOT have seen anything. She then said that she would report them for Perjury. My B/L thought he was home and dry when she pronounced him guilty and fined him.

My Dad had a cafe in Abbots Lane called
" Jim's Cafe" circa 1950. He was previously a
Docker and a well known Boxer in the later 1920's
Jimmy Wheeler from Bermondsey
He later became 'Mine Host' of The Jolly Tanners.
I think the cafe became a betting shop.
His great friend was Toby Noble. My brother Peter
and I went to Melior Street School with Toby's
2 boys and our cousins the Fishes.
Previous to all this Dad and Mick Bagnaro (Barber)
used to run the Catholic club in Melior Street.
I remember the Vinigar Yards down the street.
We actually lived opposite Tommy Hatchers and used to hang off the back of the horse and carts.
My teacher was Miss Kightly. We used to walk
Along the street street singing "we won the war
in 1944" 'cos 5 didn't rhyme with 4. !!!!
