new place

Postby ericnjorl » Thu Jan 12, 2023 10:26 pm

I am trying to see if there is any pictures, stories, or anecdotes regarding "new place" the street that existed before new place square was built. Any help would be truly appreciated

Here is a picture showing Russell Scott Buildings, which was on part of the site.

The picture above is Jamaica Road (picture in Jamaica Road Topic) with the Queen Charlotte Pub far left on the Corner of Southwark Park Road. Russell Scott Buildings were behind these shops.
New Place (c1860) was further back, roughly opposite Slipper Place which was on the other side of Southwark Park Road. New Place at the time ran from Southwark Park Road to Drummond Road crossing at that time Little Cherry Garden Street, later Cherry Garden Street which is no longer there. On the corner of Drummond Road and New Road at that time was a school called Herolds School.
