Spa Road Bakery

I have beeen asked by one of the members of the forum about old photos of Bermondsey and have come up with the idea of " Bermondsey Yesterday and Today "

My first picture is the queue outside the Spa Road Bakery in 1946.
I remember queueing for bread in that period a loaf was about 3d in real money and it was still warm when you took it home picking the end out the loaf and getting a clip round the ear for doing it!

Have you got any old pictures for the Yesterday and Today forum ?

It looks as though the trees had just been planted how they have grown in the last 50 years.

SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

Hi Fosney
Just to say thanks for several posts and photos over the last few weeks which have brought back memories the first one being the photo of the 68 tram which I used to get to and from Bermondsey Cental school to St James Church then when the trams finished the 188 bus. As regards to Spa Road bakery the 1946 picture jogged my memory and so do you remember Italian prisoners of war being imprisoned in a large building in Spa Road it was somewhere between Pearce Duffs and that bakery as I remember walking past this building and the italian prisoners used to be looking out of windows and standing on balconys. The views of old Abbey Street were interesting as my mum and dad were living there when they got married also the names and views of Millstream Road and Larnaca Street filled in gaps for me as because I am researching my family tree these streets were where my ancestors were born and lived there in the 19th century.
Thanks again
Millylinsey

Yes are I can rember the "Iti" prisoners of war in Spa Road all the kids used to hang about waiting to talk to them and the building they were housed in was the Old Salvation Army building now gone untill they were moved alsewhere. After a while they were free to go into the streets.
I can remember they used to make things and give them to the kids things such as rings.
Now if you can remember all this you are starting to give away you age like me!

A photograph looking towards Spa Rd from the park, this was taken in the early 60s. I think Alscot Rd is on the right leading into Spa Rd and the Town Hall or the Library is at the top of the photo.
