Stanworth Street. Today Stanworth Street is a small turning off of Milstream Road and joins Gedling place before it rejoins Abbey Street.
Originally Stanworth Street lay at the botton end of The Grange at a point where it joined Riley Street the old Metal Box Company factory was on the right hand side.
The whole area was bombed heavily during the war which caused lots of damage.
The bomb site between Stanworth Street and Larnaca Street after being cleared became the home of Bermondsey Greyhounds Cycle Speedway Club where a track was built from the ruins.
- Picture of Cycle Speedway on the bomb site between Stanworth Street and Larnaca Street. The picture is looking into Larnaca Street in the distance we can see the pub on the corner of Abbey Street and Pendall Street also note the prefabs that stood in Abbey Street after the war

Hi Fos where do you get these pics from, their great keep them coming. I remember the cinder track, used to go around their from the New Neckinger where i lived, and watch them on their bikes going around the track. used to ride my bike around the cobbled streets when they were wet you could do a great skid. I wonder if our paths must have crossed, during our time in Bermondsey.

Yes we may have crossed paths in this period as I always out on my bike hanging about this area and after the lads started going to do National Service I rode for Bermondsey on that track. Can you remember when the BBC did outside broadcast from the Track?
Have posted a couple of picture on the Cycle Speedway forum will bring back memories for you

Original track was in Dunton Road, near to the Greyhound Bridge, thus being called the Greyhounds.
2nd Track was on a bomb site between Stanworth Street and Larnaca Street, at the end of Riley Street now Riley Road, Bermondsey SE1, in the shadows of the old Metal Box Factory in Riley Road.
