Poppy Factory c1923
They employ disabled ex-service personnel to make remembrance poppies.
This was in an old collar factory on the corner of Old Kent Road & St James Road, The Prince of Wales (Edward VIII) visited the factory in November 1924 and ordered a large royal wreath for the Cenotaph. This started the factory’s long-standing connection with the Royal Family. At the time, the factory made some 27 million poppies and there was a long waiting list for prospective injured ex-Servicemen wanting employment. The factory eventually proved too small as demand increased, and in 1926 the factory moved to a disused brewery, the Lansdown Brewery in Petersham Road, Richmond.

I remember this well, got asked to leave on a few occasions, just because we forgot to pay to get in ;) . There was a cafe just to the right of Gervase Street we would hang out here, mid 1950s.

Hi Ray,

The photo of The Regal looks like it was taken from pretty much outside the butchers shop (John Best and not John West fishmongers as described on London Photo Archive's website) that my late father worked in for many years!
I came across the attached photo on London Photo Archive recently... if you zoom in on the butchers, my sisters agree with me, that the person standing behind the counter with their hands on their hips is probably my dad! :)
