Joe’s Cafe, Old Kent Road, 1985.

Old Kent Road 2021. Same location. I think the building on the right was Rowland’s Furniture Shop.
Now know this to be the old Post Office building, a word of thanks to member tollgatedebs, for that information.

Lovegrove Street was right of Joe’s café, but now exits in St James Road and is now a gated road.

The Swan Pub was opposite Pages Walk, and the road to the right in 1911 was called Swan Place. This part of Pages Walk is now called Mandela Way and Swan Place is now Preston Close.

Woolworths opened on the Old Kent Road in 1934 and closed after 1978. The unit was taken over by Kenyon’s Plumbers Merchants. Opposite this was Mina Road and the old Fire Station.

I think this was on the corner of Ossory Road, where Asda is today. Advertising billboards, Segas gas cookers.

Just some added information on this area. Asda is between Malt Street and Ossory Road. In the gap in between, before Asda was there was the Oxford Arms Pub, next to the pub in 1969 Manfred Mann opened his own recording studio at 488-490 Old Kent Road, called Maximum Sound, but soon re-named it The Workhouse. 1977 Ian Dury (1942-2000) recorded Boots & Panties!! album at The Workhouse studio.

The snap of the shops on the OKR brings back a few memories... much pocket money spent in ‘Stamps’ on OO model railway stuff and Airfix kits in the mid to late 70’s!
