What a great picture of the Royal George Pub. I remember as kids we would scour the local bins behind Abbey Buildings looking for empty beer bottles so we could return them to the Royal George via a tiny room at the front of the pub which was the off license, we were given a biscuit as a return deposit for each empty beer bottle bought back! Happy memories :) :) :)

Some great pictures of the Star & Garter Pub, Abbey Street, all from 1942. Be nice if anyone can recognise the people in the pictures.

The name of the shop escapes me, anyone remember???

When we lived in Abbey Buildings, Abbey Street I remember a small mini supermarket beside our flats (bottom left of the picture) which mainly catered for the Abbey Buildings residents. One day my mum asked me to go and get a few things from the shop and I saw an opportunity to get some sweets with an old half a crown (about 12p) that I kept after we went decimal. However, when I tried to palm it off to the shop assistant she went berserk and frog marched me back to my mum (everyone knew everyone in those days!) explained what I tried to do, and boy did I get it in the ear for that one
Seems quite innocent compared to what kids get up to these days?

There was a dairy there called the Thomas David Dairy but that was in the 1940s, so it could have changed names.

Have been searching for a few years now for some photos of Abbey Buildings and came across these. Have marked where we use to live. Has bought back a thousand happy memories of my childhood growing up in Bermondsey. The photo that shows the entrance to the flats has damaged railings and this was due to the milk float carts coming in daily to deliver milk. They weren't very good drivers! I don't think the council could be bothered to fix the railings as they were always getting damaged!!!

Note the damaged rails!
