Hopton's Alms-houses, Hopton Street, give a glimpse into life on Bankside over 250 years ago.
The alms-houses were built in 1752 with money left for this purpose by Charles Hopton. 26 poor men were selected to live in the alms-houses who also received £6 per annum, which increased to 21s 8d per month, together with a cauldron of coals
The cottages have been continuously occupied and after modernisation in 1988, and further renovation in 2013, 20 1-bedroomed units have been available for Southwark residents over 60 who have lived in the borough for at least three years
Hopton’s Alms-houses are managed by the United St Saviour’s Charity, a long-established charity that has its roots in the 16th century.

The 1977 view shows two dominant activities. In the background is Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's Bankside Power Station, built in 1957 to 1960 on the site of an earlier station, and before that a gas works, now the Tate Modern.

This part of Holland Street is now Hopton Street.
Epps & Co was the largest cocoa powder producer in Britain by 1878, with an output of nearly five million pounds (2.3 million kg) a year. To accommodate increasing production, a new steam-powered works was established at Holland Street, Blackfriars from 1878. At its peak, the firm processed half of all cocoa imports into Britain.

This (eastern) part of Hopton Street was renamed in the 1980s to Holland Street. The buildings were demolished c.1978.
