Left is Leo Street School, the big building and square in the middle are, The Asylum and Caroline Gardens. Originally known as the Licensed Victuallers Benevolent Institution Asylum. However, despite being called an asylum, the grade-II-listed site was not a home for lunatics, instead more a sanctuary and it was in fact an old folk’s home for retired pub landlords (or “decayed members of the trade” as they were known at the time)."

Hi Ray,

That photo would have been taken from one of the three tower blocks being constructed on the Tustin Estate, around the late 60's.
My sisters went to the school, known as Collingwood girls school by then.
When I worked at the TV shop in the OKR, we had a lot of elderly customers living in Caroline Gardens... Given how much the local area was run down by the early 80's, the grounds within Caroline Gardens always looked nice, especially with the well kept flower beds!
The central 'chapel' was no longer in use, but with it's stripped back to bare brickwork look, it is now a popular venue for weddings and music.
Over the Christmas period, I watched a 'no audience' concert performed by Joan Armatrading, recorded in the chapel... if you like Joan, it's definitely worth a watch - brilliant!
