Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, Once the viaduct was built, cutting across W.P.L, I'm fairly certain that it's connection to Ilderton Rd/ Canterbury Road, was severed for good! Access to Ilderton Road would be via Wagner Street, as it is now. I worked at Wallis TV & Radio Ltd for over 20 years; our rear entrance was at...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, That was an interesting read about the iron works in Pomeroy Street (do you know which end it was?) I remember my Granddad mentioning about a factory that made steam engines in New Cross, I just assumed he meant static engines! In your most recent pictures, the view from Ambleside Point is v...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi woodpoleman, Yes, I think that is the same map I saw years ago! Many thanks for posting it. I would love a PDF of that if that's ok? I'll PM you my email address. It definitely looks like White Post Lane was discected by the railway viaduct when it was built. On the map, White Post Lane is pretty...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, I can't find any additional info on the cafe, but I did find some info on the Little Wonder pub! It was originally at 9 Canterbury Road, but the address changed to 322 Ilderton Road around 1944 following the street renaming. According to Pubhistory.com, the last landlord from 1944 was a Alfr...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, Again, great photos! the last one certainly brings back some memories... my house was just the other side of the corrugated iron! Also in shot is the rear of my old next door neighbour's dark green mk1 Ford Escort. My guess is that photo was taken around 1980-81 after the end of terrace hous...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, I spoke to my mum today... Yes, she does remember the cafe, she thinks it was a couple of doors along from the fish and chip shop, which was owned by Bill and Vye. She doesn't remember what it was called though unfortunately, only that it was frequented by rough lads from Bermondsey and Peck...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Ray, I'll have to ask mum... do you remember whereabouts in Ilderton Road it was? Mum was brought up in Upcott Street and remembers more of the old buildings and shops. When I was growing up, there was only two parades of shops left between canal bridge and the OKR end of Ilderton Road, that bein...

Re: Ilderton Road
Hi Kiwi, The photos of Ilderton Rd (between Rollins St and Sharratt St) and Ilderton Rd Bridge are exactly how I remember the area as a kid! 'Ye Odds and Ye Sods' at the beginning of the bridge was run by Dolly, with the Bridge Cafe next door. Charlie, if I remember correctly ran the other second ha...

Back Once Again....
Hi All, Not sure if this is the correct place for this post, apologies if not. I joined the original Bermondsey Boy back in 2011 and found it a great source of information about my old stamping ground. I also submitted a number of posts, mostly about the area around Ilderton Road, Grand Surrey Canal...
