Re: THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

My Granddad George Horton went with hundreds of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe men to Deptford Town Hall in October 1915 and enlisted in the 137th Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. They went to France in April 1916. I have read all the war diaries showing where they fought throughout the Great War...

Re: BRANDON STREET

Seeing that picture of Guinness Buildings reminded me of when I was a little boy. The railings were gone for the war effort and had not been replaced. I used to walk along the top of the little wall. One day I tried to jump the gap where the block entrance was and missed. I took the skin off my shin...

Re: The Archers a military family

Since the above post I have kept on researching and discovered that yet another of the Archer brothers took the call to arms. On 22nd June 1915 docker George Archer followed in his brother’s footsteps and went along to the Army recruitment office where he joined the Army Service Corps for the durati...

The Archers a military family

My great grandmother Harriet Archer from Rotherhithe and Bermondsey had 10 siblings one of whom died in early childhood. Neither being particularly unusual in those days. What really excited me was that she had nine brothers, five of who went off and joined the Army as regular soldiers. One of them ...

Re: BERMONDSEY CARNIVAL

Hello,

I have got a copy of the Carnival Album and yes there is a picture of a young man in a kilt on page 31. The heading is FLORAL CAR Mr Mills, Southwark Park Road.
I will try to scan the photo and put it on this forum.

Re: Borough High Street

This is my Great Aunt Rose Basham outside Effords Bakery 269 Borough High Street. The photo would have been taken in about 1920. The bakery also had a branch in Great Dover Street.

Re: This is Bermondsey

I almost brought this up a few weeks ago but didn't know how to go about it. I think most of the recent posts have been too far out to be considered suitable for Bermondsey Boy. I very nearly decided to stop logging on. If it was meant to be a general site about South London I am sure you would have...

Re: The Grange

This photo was taken outside The Red Cow in the 1950s. My Nan Elsie Voss is on the left. I think the two in the car are actors and may have been filming locally. Any ideas who everyone is?
