Newby found site after googling re Guiness Buildings, Page Walk, SE1
So excited to have found this site. My trying to trace my ancestors has taken me yonks as - coming from Southern Irish stock - my Dad told a marvellous story - but he was a past master at guilding the lily. From knee high to a grass-hopper I've believed that a noble ancestor, Jean-Jaques Sacristan, a Viking n'er do well, after settling in Normandy joined the 1066 invasion & later ended up in County Cork. He & his descendants became 'Seanachies' - not sure re spelling but they were the travelling news-carriers. Obviously relying upon newsworthy stories - to get a bed & meal for the night - they became - like the tabloids of today - remarkable & believable liars. Well in 1829 - so family history tells me - one Mad Bad Black Jack Sexton - to avoid being hung for horse stealing - stole another, rode to Dublin hitched a lift over to England & London joining the newly formed Metropolitan Police.
He settled - I was told - in the Bermondsey area. Well imagine my glee when checking into census info I discover my great grandfather listed as living in 280,Guiness Buildings, Pages Walk SE1 in 1901. I know it's a long trek back to checking the rest out - but it's a start.
Good to be on the site
