Looking back
They say you should never look back and now I wish I hadn't, I googled my childhood home in Welsford Street and could hardly recognise the street I knew. We moved in in 1940 after getting bombed out from Farncombe St. Our row of houses are still there but there are garages opposite
now. I knew there was going to be some changes when my mother moved out in the 70's but it was a shock to find St Anne's Church hidden up behind the flat's, it used to be such a lovely view as you walked up the street. I feel quite sad.
I see the pub The Finnish is up for sale too.
The Telephone Exchange is still standing behind the row houses that are left, I wonder what they do there now?
it is still something to do with bt but not sure what, the finish has just been refurbished into flats...
Hi there joybar4 - I have been a resident in Welsford Street for a little while now and I have to agree after looking at the photos on this site of the square St Annes is in it was such a shame to knock all of those beautiful houses down. The lovely little motor parts shop is till intact though and the pub has been made into some very lovely flats with very little chaged. The area has also become a listed site so no more plastic housing we hope! :)
Even more so for those of us who were living in them!!!looking at the photos on this site of the square St Annes is in it was such a shame to knock all of those beautiful houses down.
