I also worked in the Bingo in the Blue.circa 1973/75
I was the prize bingo caller until the original caller swore at one of the players
one Saturday afternoon and walked out, and I took over the main session calling.
I started there when it was Legalite, manager then was a brummy named Gary... it was later taken over by Mecca. Gary left and Mick Murphy  became manager.
This is where I met my partner, she was one of the runners at the time.
Quite enjoyed my time there..

Hi willoughby1948

My husband Ken was a driver for synchemicals around 1963/64, which was before your time.  He used to deliver stuff to farms and he would take my young sister out with him when she was on holiday from school.  I also used to buy ciggies from old Ruby, as we called the man in Rubens.
I knew all the Lush family, Ruth, Johnny and Jimmy.  I now live in Whitstable and have such wonderful memories of Bermondsey.
Regards
Linda

Hello Willoughby48
The description sounds like my Mum but its not the same person.   Mum is quite a bit older than you. She is 79 and its their Diamond wedding anniversary next month.  Just spoken to  Mum and she reckons she worked at Synchemicals in the mid 1960s. It was called GH Richards Synchemicals then and the boss was Mr Richards.  My other Nan lived in Keyes Road just past old Ruebens shop about the same time, so I remember all those shops you are talking about.  The houses are all gone now...its just part of the park.

Margaret

Mum doesn't remeber any of the people you mention except Mr Richards and Mr Douglas.  She thinks the firm moved to the Borough.

Was the house opposite Fendall St in the Grange Rd. It was a really nice house. I used to think it would be nice living there. There was a pub right across from it. It may have been called the Grange.
I vaguely remember having a schoolboy friend called Brian Willoughby. Was he related?

did you go to any of the parties at the Lush's prefab off of Willow Walk opposite the Alscot Arms?
Ruth used to sing at the Bricklayers Arms pub in the Old Kent Road. The Zac Lawrence Quartet provided the music. Do you remember Peter the Pouf. He used to sing there too. Had a great voice.

Synchemicals Limited is still alive and kicking! It relocated from Grange Walk in 1988 to Coalville in Leicestershire. The businss still makes Nippon Ant Killer. Douglas was my Uncle and Brian was my father. I worked in Bermondsey from 1980 to the time we moved and now run the business. I have some great memories. Some of the staff from Bermondsey moved to Leicester. Dot Garnett was the name of the secretary, and Mrs Doreen Harris was secretary to my father. Linda, her daughter also worked there. Linda married Jimmy, another employee.
