Best Nosh off The Old Kent Road
Hello Bermondsey boys and girls,
I've read all the comments about pie and mash, used to frequent Berts in The Old Kent Road and the establishment at the beginning of I think Peckam Park Road just opposite the Astoria, after we had been to Saturday morning pictures.
However, I don't think anyone has mentioned the best food to be had in the 1960s. I refer to George's Bar, or the hole in the wall, as we referred to it right opposite the Dun Cow in Dunton Road,
George never sold fish as I recall but the pease pudding faggots and chips were a rare treat. I remember queueing up outside the old tin shack after having a few sherberts in the Becket with loads of other youngsters. I remember the walls inside were painted with pictures of things like " Saveloy and chips, the perfect pair" etc. floating down on a parachute!
Great food and I remember walking home to Abbey Street trying to save a bit for my mum when I got in. She loved the old pease pudding and faggots.
These days I make my own, not bad but not as good as George's!
Happy Days,
Bobby
Hi Bobby
Your correct the Hole in Wall George's bar was great after having a few Jars in your locaI.
I lived in Ash House, Longfield Estate just on the other side of Dunton Bridge, and was an easy walk to George's.
A few Drinks in the Claremont and faggots and chips after was very welcoming.
George's was more of a Take-away where as Pie and Mash was a sit down meal, usually for me on a Saturday lunchtime.
I Did try Bert's on occassion but for me the best was Manze.
Did you Flip your Pies?

Hello Bobby1, I remember the pie and mash shop in Peckham Park Road, my brother used to take me in there when I was a kid, sometimes we would eat there or bring it all home to mum and dad, on a Saturday morning/lunchtime. Good old days indeed. My husband and I (ahem, quite posh that) used to go to the wimpy bar on Tower Bridge Road on Saturday lunchtimes in the early seventies..great memories. Cheers!
Used to love 'the Hole in the wall'. Every Saturday night would have sav and p.pudding. Then go home and watch One Step Beyond!!!!!!!!!!
The Becket was at the corner of Albany Road and the Old Kent Rd. Tight opposite was Dunton Road. The Dun Cow was the pub on the corner. The "Hole in the Wall" was along Dunton Road on the right just next to the railway tracks at the bottom end of Rouel Rd. The chips were unbelievable. The pickled onions were to die for. That's the way I remember it.
Matt Munro (Walk Away et al) started his career in the Becket. A few well known boxers used to train above the pub.
Jarsy, I think that you must have been at the sherbet on your last posting. Oppisite the beckett wasHumprey stree. Dunton rd and the Dun Cow was oppisite Smirks rd./ Just past Mina rd. What you call the hole in the wall was known to the locals as GEORGES.
I dont know where the rail tracks came into dunton road /although you put ROULL.
All the best and keep posting. Ref Gloucest arms. That is where i had my firsy LEGAL drink. Bottle of brown ale for 9d. Happy new year to all.
