The Hostel, Decima Street
During the war, around 1942 to 1945, my mother Rose Blanchard ran the Rest Center in Decima Street. The Rest Center was for people who had been bombed out of their homes and were temporarily housed there. I was born in 1941, so have very little memory of the place other than I fell down the iron fire escape and had to have stitches in the gash on my forehead. I visited Decima Street in 2009 and I think the Hostel is the same place that now houses a school. From what I have been told the Hostel was once a home for unmarried mothers. After the war our family moved to Chelsea If anyone has any information on The Hostel or Rest Center in Decima Street I love to hear about it.
Hi, the above poster is from my Aunt. Together we went to Decima Street in 2009 as she mentioned and the building is now housing the very wonderful Kid's Company (at least we're 99% sure it was the same building!). If so, it is so good to know the same building is being used to help people all these years later! I do hope some of you older folk will remember the Rest Centre my Grandmother ran! (Hello Aunt !)
I understand there is someone who may be doing some research about this - and I am sorry that there is no-one on this forum who recalls this Rest Centre! Please get in touch if you do, or have elderly relatives who recall it. Best wishes.
