I remember some good singers in the 60s - in The Kings Arms  Old Kent Road - the resident group was a trio,  If I remember right it was Pete and Shirley (singers) and Lee on the drums  - they were in a bad car accident and I think one of them died or very badly injured (not sure if memory is right) does any one else remember them- there  was also a girl who always got up to sing Bobbys Girl  - didnt know her name we just used to call her Bobbys girl - lol - there were a lot of good singers who used to get up and sing - not like the rubbish you hear on Kareoke nights!!!

Just about remember The Kings Arms, went there once with my older brothers, think I was about 15 at the time so had to keep quite. It was a big pub more or less on the corner between Old and New Kent Road if I remember right. The only singer I remember was a girl singing Puppet on a String and yes she had no shoes on. When I was about 17 started using The Hampton Court Palace in Hampton Street, Tom Reidy was the Landlord would stand at the door smoking a cigar. Fat Lou was the band compare. Another good pub was The Kings Arms in Walworth Road, just by Elephant Road

Hi Scromba

There is a short recording of Mrs Shufflewick (Rex Jameson) at the Black Cat on Youtube.
Probably not the one you wanted but interesting.

HI EVERYONE

Just been looking at the Pub Etertainers web site and can count on one hand the pubs I've not had a pint in over the years. My brother used to sing in most of them during the 50s 60s& 70s and had quite a following in South London. He went under the name Robby Dare, though he was mainly a singer, he was also a bit of a joker so i think that's where the name came from.He was compere in The Gregorian, (with the eel stall outside) Adam & Eve,The Bricklayers Arms, The Dun Cow,The Kentish Drovers and many more in and around South London.I'm not sure if he was friends with Wee Willy Harris but i know they used to have a drink together in and around the Bermondsey pubs, one being The Horseshoe by the Trocette. This was the late 50s early 60s, when Russ Conway who used to play the piano and had hit records with Side Saddle and Roulette,( two that come to mind) used to play there. Also can anyone remember when the World Turned Upside Down used to have,( i'll call them Bohemian nights) or people who where slightly different from norm there .I remember seeing Andy Warhol one night, went completly over my head and that was before i had a drink. Be nice if anyone remember my brother or anything else i have mentioned

Russ Conway lived in the flats on the corner of The Neckinger and Horney Lane (now Grange Walk).

I recall the World Turned Upside Down from the 1966/68 period and in those days it was just a regular pub.

Hi paperboy!

Funny you should mention Russ Conway because my mum told me years ago that he used to play the piano in The Fleece pub in Abbey Street!
I thought she was imagining it but as you say Russ Conway lived in the flats on the corner of The Neckinger and Horney Lane she was most probably right!

Kind regards

Lesley

It's a shame that out of all the pubs Kiwi mentions his brother sang in, only two are still going - The Greg and the Adam & Eve.

Hi Everyone. This is my first post on this forum. I left Bermondsey in 1968 when we moved to the Midlands with my Dad's job. I lived in Devon Mansions on Tooley Street and later Balin House on Long Lane. I went to St Joseph's Primary School on George Row. My Nan and Grandad lived on Gainsford Street, My Nan used to work at the Gin Factory on McGuire Street and my Grandad used to drive the dray for Courage Brewery. I have very fond memories of living in Bermondsey. I had a friend from school who lived in the flat with the dome on Weston Street. I remember walking every day to school past a building on Crucifix Lane with a fancy tile arrangement in grey and yellow. I used to go to St John's Park .I remember the paths were grey tarmac speckled with white. Why am I putting this post under Pub Entertainers? My Dad played piano regularly in the Fleece. His name was Tom Harper. The family say he has played with Russ Conway. This makes sense as Russ lived close by. This would have been in the early Sixties 1960-67?. I wonder does anyone remember Tom? I understand Max Bygraves also went into the Fleece. It would be amazing if someone remembers him.

my dad played piano in all the pubs he told us one night a fellow went round with a jar and collected a load of money for him - he disappeared out the door.  Russ Conway was my dads favorite he had all russ conway piano party singles, and winifred atwell - apparently she lived in dulwich.  Sparks used to play in a pub in peckham

Hi Garymillwall, I knew Raymond, Charlie Deverson's younger brother, the family lived in Drummond Rd. between Banyard & Marden Rd.'s.  I was in the same class as Raymond at Southwark Park School about 1946-47. Regards Jim Roll.
