I have beeen asked by one of the members of the forum about old photos of Bermondsey and have come up with the idea of " Bermondsey Yesterday and Today "

My first picture is the queue outside the Spa Road Bakery in 1946.
I remember queueing for bread in that period a loaf was about 3d in real money and it was still warm when you took it home picking the end out the loaf and getting a clip round the ear for doing it!

Have you got any old pictures for the Yesterday and Today forum ?

It looks as though the trees had just been planted how they have grown in the last 50 years.

Another picture for the collection

Tower Bridge in 1900 a few years after the opening the horses had not yet been replaced by the motor vehicle and the reconstruction of the area had not yet taken place.

Tower Bridge today apart from the traffic congestion it is still recoginsable. And the horses have been replaced by the car.

The two pictures of "Tower Bridge" are taken from different positions. The 1900's shot shows the view from Queen Elizabeth Street probably taken from the bank building (shown on the corner of Tooley Street in the google earth/google street view below). The bank and the Tower Bridge Hotel (now the Pommelers Rest) where built to form an impressive 'gateway' to the new bridge.

You are right about the sweet shop. He used to supply the Scouts with boxes of sweets for their events at a discount.
I've got a feeling that the other shop sold second-hand domestic appliances? I've got a vague vision, of in my youth, seeing heaters and maybe furniture in the window.

im thinking there were 4 or 5 shops there one of them was a barbers he used to be in cherry gdn st an when they were knocked down he went to that little row of shops an then when they were knocked down he moved across the road to the shops under the flats next  the horse meat shop its funny how you follow your barber around

Jimmika you could well be right about the shops in Southwark Park Road by the park entrance I truly cant remember as I lived up the far end of Southwark Park Road where the Alwyn playing field now is.

  • But to follow on with we have a picture of the bomb site between Alderminster Road with its junction with St James Road looking across the bomb site.  Lynton Road to the right and Monnow Road crossing we can just see on the corner of Monnow Road with its junction with Lynton Road the shop on the corner next to the prefabs that used to be Mendittas barber shop a hair cut at that time was 6d for boys in real money some 3p in todays value," those were the days " on this site the cycle speedway took place and it later become Paterson Park
The modern picture from google is taken from the junction of Monnow Road and Lynton Road looking across the park towards St James Road

Who remembers going down Shad Thames as a kid, the whole area was a hive of industry and the smell of spices that would drift from the warehouses was wonderful. No Health and Safety in those days and as a kid you could explore the whole area right down to the river side to the waters edge.

Today if you enter Shad Thames from St Saviours Dock end you can still smell the aroma of the spices from all those years ago.    Memories ..........

Picture of Canon Beck Road 1951 makes one realise how close it was to the river and with  todays picture you would not think it was the same place

I thought that the ship in the 1950's photo was in Albion Dock, the view being southwards toward the dock wall. The view to the river (in the other direction) would have been blocked by wharfs.

Picture of Parkers Row time being late forties early fifties the buses and trams still frequent the area and the old buildings are still standing on the left and new building are being constructed on the right but by the look of it even these have now gone.
.
The public house in the distance is The Swan and Sugarloaf now closed and as we can see it was a Watneys House

With further reconstruction in the area with the new duel carrigeway to improve the flow of traffic this part of Dockhead became high and dry

The old pub now closed can be seen in the distance on the corner

Picture of Thorburn Square in 1963 as I remember it going to the church with the cub pack the area is now unrecognisable

The modern picture and I suppose it compliments the area

All that remains is the church
