Harold Estate.
I passed a few names mentioned in the Harold Estate topic to my old friend Evelyn who is 90 in Nov and still living in same flat at Harold Estate on the ground floor since 1942. She remembers Mr Stacey the caretaker and Diane Dumbrell and apparantly Diane still comes to perm her hair twice a year. I sent her copies of the pics of Harold Estate on here which she liked very much. Shame she cant joint the Forum, she still very much has all her marbles, but she has enough trouble with her TV remote poor love.
Hi Babsy1
You have just remindsed me of yet another name from Harold Estate, Diane Dumbrell, i think she lived at the Vic. ph end of the Estate overlooking the alleyway that led into pages walk?
And of course Joe Stacey (Caretaker) I was mates with his Grandson.
I would think Diane would now be in her 60's?

Reading your post, the name Elson rang a bell, I'm fairly sure an Elson was in my class at Tower Bridge. The picture of my class I posted on page 2 of Riley Road School, thats what it was called before, he is sitting bottom left front row, I could not recall most of the names but seeing it joged my memory, thanks for that.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help please. We (National Asbestos Helpline) are assisting a lady with her investigations following her father's death - she needs to find out about the presence of asbestos at the Anchor butter factory in Tooley Street SE1. Her father worked there from 1965 for a few years. I did a search and found this site. He died from an asbestos-related cancer.
Bermondseywaller - I notice you mentioned your Dad worked there also. Do you know of asbestos use at the factory, perhaps used to lag pipes or machinery in boiler rooms?
Many thanks for any information you may have that can help. Please reply here or call 0800 043 6635 and speak to the case manager Jan Garvey.
Hi Clairenah
My Dad worked for Anchor Butter during the early/mid 70's and as far as I can remember (I was only 8/9 years old at the time) they were then based in Long Lane not Tooley Street. I cannot ask Dad as he passed away in 1992. So sorry I am unable to help. Hope you can get the information you need from another source.

An update for Harold Estate.
Just sent to me by Patrick Long, the 1950 and 1961 Electorial Returns.
Do you recognise any of the names?

Steve.
Hello Steve,
Thanks for that it's very interesting. I was in touch with Carol Holman recently who lived at no 33.
Unfortunately the list is not complete, 34 to 49 being missing on the 1950 list.
Hello Rod
Yes i have noticed that they are not complete, they were really aimed at my Family and the Callen Family, also trying to work out the numbering system.
I will ask Patrick if he can get the complete list.
Steve.
Thanks Steve
I have had a look at the Electoral Register before at Southwark Library, but didn't get a copy. I had a look around Harold Estate last week, I took a few shot's which I would like to post, but it won't let me do this, there's a issing Plug message.

HI ROD.
The picture of the archway on Harold Estate which I remember is looking towards Pages Walk. I wonder if you can remember two rows of trees on the left and right, starting just as you came in from Pages Walk, probable four or five either side. I can remember throwing bricks up into the trees but I can’t remember what we were trying to knock down, I’m sure it wasn’t conkers. I did post this question way back but never got any replies, so hoping you can help, I’m sure I never dreamt it. This would have been the late forties and early fifties. By the way I also knew Jimmy Rolfe.
Cheers KIWI.
Hi Kiwi
I shall ask my brother about the tree's, I can't remember' as you say not conkers which were almost like currency' they were so special.
You lived at Harold Estate about the same time as me' I'm glad you also knew Jimmy Rolfe.
Regards Rod.
A couple of shots I took on the 20th Feb, showing the Archway in my block and the corner where I lived.

[/quote: Dibley 47] I love the photograph of the arches within the arch, should be displayed somewhere, because it was taken with care and forethought.
HI ROD.
The picture of your house
on Harold Estate, not sure but if you look left is that towards Guinness’s only
that’s where I lived. End block nearest to Swan Mead, one landing from the top.
This would be from 1942 to about 1963, which means we could actually see each
other’s houses. Above us on the top floor was John Comber, who you might have
known. Do you remember the big wall that separated the estates, which I think
must have been about twenty foot high? The times I dropped down that wall to get
away from George Horton the caretaker of Guinness’s, for climbing all over the
sheds, only to be greeted by Mr Stacey the caretaker of Harold Estate. Talk
about out of the frying pan into the firer.
KIWI
Hi Kiwi,
Yes I think we must have been able to see each others places, we were on the first floor and looked directly across to Guiness Buildings. Yes I do remember the high brick wall, I wonder why it was there. As lads we always climbed everything, just what boys do. It's a great thing about this Forum, having contact with People we must grown up with and seen without knowing well, all the years later
we can swap memories.
Rod.
