Haulage firms of Bermondsey
I am particularly interested in any lorry haulage firms that operated in Bermondsey. I lived in Albion Street after the war and remember that some firms operated off of bomb sites. There were some big names too. Atlas Express had a big depot for parcel deliveries in Canon Beck Road. Pickfords had a depot in Tower Bridge Road. Has anyone got any memories?
I remember Carter Paterson and Pickfords which was a parcel service they had a depot in Willow Walk and were bought up by the railway companys and later become British Road Services the depot worked 24-7 and mainly got the work from the Bricklayers Arms depot
The Pickford depot in Tower Bridge Road I beleive was on the site of the Antique dealers yard with the gates on the front
halpins was opposite me in tranton rd an they had another yard up by cherry gdn pier i had to go up there to sort out the insurance when one of there lorrys backed into my nice new norton motorbike an smashed up the forks the driver didnt know he had done it so it took some convincing with no witnesses but they paid up 65 quid as i remember on another subject i always thought i spent the first ten years of my life in matson st but i came across my id card and my address is monarch buildings i guess mum an dad fell out for a while
Thomas Potter Priestley TPP had a depot in the Hays Wharf area I know because my grandfather used to drive for them. They hauled mainley fruit and veg and had an enclosed garage and yard
Another haulage company had a depot in Grange Road oposite the Alaska factory cant remember the name but one of the members lived next door and his father worked for them so perhaps we will get the name
Perhaps freddie can help as he seems to have old records to hand
Thanks Jimmika. I had forgotten about Halpins in Tranton Rd. My uncle drove for them for a few years.
Thanks Fosney. My Dad worked for Pickfords in Tower Bridge Road before the war. I think he actually learned to drive there.
That's a lovely photo of the Cater Paterson's Austin.
i seem to rember my dad Brian Austin worked for Brian Robson who used to own a haulage firm. I think they were at the Brick Layers arms.

Found another haulage company here on the forum and a picture to go with it.
Gosnells Transport whos base was under the railway arches in Raymouth Road specialists in Timber Haulage mainly from Surrey Docks, and of course they ran the service station in Southwark Park Road in those days. And the service station in New Kent Road on the site of St Andrews Church that was.
Thanks Fosney that's great. I lived in Southwark Park Rd up until the mid 1970s, just a few hundred yards from Gosnell's Service Station. I never realised that also had a timber haulage firm also. There were quitew a few timber haulage firms in Bermondsey. My uncle worked for Ingram Perkins in Janeway Street and later at Minetts just off of Plough Way.
I really like the photo.
How about Curtis's in Maltby Street, one driver lived in the house next door to the yard. Malby St is very narrow and when other drivers had had several attemps to reverse into the yard, he would jump into the cab and reverse in one go. They also had a Scammel tractor unit.
Tom
Scammel tractor units, now you've really got my attention. I haven't heard of Curtis's in Maltby St. What were they heavy haulage?
I remember from about the 1960's Span Haulage of Swan Lane, just off of Albion St. They had a gorgeous Scammel tractor unit with a 60ft long trailer. They did all sorts of Heavy haulage. The lorry and trailer had a bright orange livery which made them stand out.
I think a firm called Robson's operated from a bomb-site off of Albion St. They had brown open topped lorries that carried brewer's grain. Probably contracted to Courage's brewery perhaps?
Halpins Hauliers was run by Jim,John and Jean halpin, they were second cousins of mine. The house in Tranton road was damaged by incendiary Bombs during the Blitzs, and Halpins bought it and built a new one on the site. There was a workshop at the back from the Storks road entrance where John and Cousin Joe worked on the Lorries...Jim and Jean Halpin also had the Beehive Cafe in Jamaica Road, next to the Rising Sun Pub...The Haulage firm beccame Pierpointhalpin at a later date......I would like to know who had the Norton that was damaged by one of halpins Lorries,as i lived in Major road, and we/i always had Triumphs, until i Bought a Lovely Big Vincent.....Also i remember George Cummins Transport, that was located in Tranton Road Opposite Halpins place,,He had lots of garages for rent, and a small machine shop...it was a great place for MOT,s....
it was me who had the norton i lived next door to cummins yard we was always taking batteries in there to get charged that was about 67 68
Oh right..my Motorcycling days were in the middle and late fifties.I dont know if you have heard of me or my Racing Friend Roy Monto, who lived in St James Road, corner of Collet Road.We bought an AJS 7r and went Racing...He used to work for Sackets the Greengrocers on Sat and Sun,pushing the Barrow up to the Blue, and on Sundays, going around the streets selling Fruit and Veg..Two Brothers Tim and Frank, and the Mum and Dad...When we were kids they used to let us watch Muffin the Mule on their Black andf White Tele...All the kiids sitting on the floor in their Lounge...Cant imagine that happening today ...Bill Killick
My dad used to drive for Kia ora i think there yard was in silwood street. He also used to drive for courages brewery.
my father john dale worked for cummins as well as gosnells?
Hi george61,
Curtis's were light haulage just as well because Malby St can only be about 35ft wide.
Yes the good old Scammell, lots of yellow ones all around the Bricklayers arms.
Tom.
