Hello Bermondsey people,

I  grew up and lived in Stockwell and Clapham from 1947.  My dad was born and grew up in New Cross and went to St Lukes RC school in Deptford and was an altar boy in Our Lady of Assumption.  He lost two brothers at Ypres and the Somme Bernard and Frederick Tibbitts, his other brother who was sent to the Somme was returned injured, joined the Merchant Navy, obviously docked up in Scotland and met his wife, Jane Cleland where they married in Edinburgh.

My grandfather happened to live at 14 Rothsay St., Bermondsey, and I only know that because my uncle, Alfred Owen Tibbitts death certificate states this as his address and my grandfather, John Tibbitts was stated  as also his address.  Uncle Alfred died on  27.7.1927 aged 29 years.

There were 4 children born but only 2 survived to grow up, and I think they must have attended a local primary school near Rothsay St.I  believe they were later evacuated to Romford, Essex and their names were: Bernard and Jean Tibbitts.  Sadly, Bernard in 1943 was killed in a bike accident at 18 years of age but Jean possibly married a Bixby in Romford in 1949 and that is where I am stuck, but hoping to press on.

I chanced to look up Bermondsey history to see where Rothsay St. was and came across this forum.  I was surprised to find a member, Fred Cockerton, actually lived at some time at 14 Rothsay St. and would love to have the house described and what was around.  I never knew my grandfather, I know he moved back to New Cross but was evacuated to Yorkshire and moved to a Greenwich Hospital  in 1945 as he was dying and luckily my dad had just docked at Portsmouth as he had been in north Africa for 4 years so was able to see him before he died.  I would love to trace any children of this cousin, Jean.  I was called Erica after my dad, Eric.
