Hi
My name is Simon Faulkner I was born in Guys Hospital back in March 1968. I moved to Northampton in June 1981 but I have kept all my great memories of growing up in Bermondsey during the 1970's. My first home was down the Blue behind the old woolworth until 1971 where I moved to Abbey Building's. I was there until 1974 where I moved to St Owen Hse Abbey Street.
My first school was Boutcher and from then on I went to Bacon. Doe's any one remember Fisher Boys club or went to it. I think it was in 1976 where I started to watch Abbey Buildings being knocked down. We used to play football in a cage at the back of Owen Hse and our ball kept going over the wall into Abbey Buildings once they were gone.
Once Abbey Buildings was gone it showed what I could only think was a tunnel opening which went under the road at Abbey St, Does anyone know or remember this?
I remember collecting the smurfs from the National petrol station by the railway bridge just after the row of shops. After living school we used to pop in the Red sweet shop down the road from Boutcher. I will add to this a later on, but I wondered if any body can help me?
I looking for an old friend of mine.
Her name was Kathleen Toms aged about 43 now with long blonde hair. Kathleen went to Bacon school as well and also went to a youth club on Grange Rd. Kathleen had a friend named Alison.
Kathleen lived above the row of shops down the road from Owen Hse with her mum.

Hi Superminx

The Fisher Boys Boxing club is as far as I know still going.
I never went there, instead I joint the Fitzroy Lodge.
The Abbey Buildings I never knew to much about but there is this site that may be of interest.
http://knowledgeoflondon.com/bermondsey.html

There seems to be some sort of Nave that run quite a distance.

As for Kathleen Toms, I have checked Friends reunited and Face book but as yet have had no Luck...sorry

But you never know, she may stumble on this site?
Good Luck in your search.

I remember the fisher athletic club. with regards to your friend, there are several ways to go around searching for your friend. I'd suggest trying to use 192.com and do an electoral roll search, or use the census records.especially as the census was last done this year and before that 1991 I'll see if I can come up with anything when I am able to log into mycensus

Cant help you about your friends, but I used to live at 10 St.Owen House, and my mate Billy Walker lived on the top floor from about 1964.
I used to play football in the cage too, but my mum would come out on our balcony  in the evening and tell everyone to " sling your hook" Bit embarrasing at the time, but we came from Catlin Street after they knocked our house down and you know what bermondsey people are like, they do stand up for themselves!

Bit of a coincidence, but I was born in 1968,although I lived on the Neckenger,I went to Boucher and then Bacons, also went to Fisher every week to play football on the roof and swimming!
We must have been to both schools at the same time as each other, but although your name rings a bell,I cant picture you, yet!Unfortunatley I dont remember Kathleen Toms,I'll ask about as I'm still in contact with a few old mates,I'll pm you if I find out any info!
As for Abbey street,a gang of us used to play football on the estate behing the shops, cant remember the name, but as you lived there, you may have been part of the gang! plus my aunt owned the kids clothes shop on the parade in the 70s,could go on and on,but I'd bore you silly!!

I'm glad someone remembers it. Does your brother know if its was from the Abbey?
I know in the celler of the old 20th Bermondsey scout building there is a tunnel leading to the church.
When I went to cubs and scouts there I wanted to go though it but it had been filled in when Grange Rd was built

when you crossed the road from abbey st (towerbridge road) toward bermondsey park (mary magdalan park) there used to be  - inthe middle of the road a metal grate and when you looked down you could see the tunnel - the same thing existed further down in tower bridge road where the crossing is now - on the side of manzies, but its been filled in.

Thats very interesting to know. I have always be keen to find out about the tunnel since I first saw it after Abbey Building's was knocked down in the mid 1970's. I now live in Northampton after moving out of Bermondsey in 1981. I was born in Guy's in 1968 and lived in Abbey Building during the first 3 years of my life until my brother was born in 1971. I have great memories of growing up there, like going in the red sweet shop along Grange Rd after finishing school (Boucher).
If you would like to know more please let me know
