Thanks so much for a really interesting site!
I have attached another photograph of the Lord Palmerston Pub in Lucey Road where my great-grandfather was the landlord. My Nan used to pull pints there and can still tell a tale or two as she celebrated her 100th birthday this week! (February 2010) I don't know what year my great-grandfather/mother James (Jim) & Ada Wright took or left the pub but 'Grandpop Wright' and the family then moved to run another pub in Margate during it's heyday where a lot of the 5th generation still live today.

Lord Palmerston - Lucey Road

Hi Frankie

Please wish your Nan a Happy Birthday from me, I'm sure she must have lots of tales to tell about the times she spent in Bermondsey.
I have put your picture on site, hope you don't mind it just makes it a little easier for Members to see.
There are a few people here on the site that are from the Lucey Road area, my Wife being one of them.
Hope to here more from you and your Nan.

You might find the info at this site of assistance:
http://deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/Bermondsey/LordPalmerston.shtml

It shows that Kellys Directory gives Jas Wm Wright resident in 1934

....and your wife was from Lucey Road too! -It sure is a small world eh? especially all the families from Bermondsey. I'm going to invite my cousin to visit here as she has lots of old photographs of the family in Bermondsey.
All best

thanks for that link Freddie to 1934. I'm just trying to get more info on James William Wright from other family members and will post what I find out. By all accounts he was a bit of a wheeler dealer and I think he offered a pawn service judging by the amount of Tom my great-grandmother is wearing in old photos from that time!
cheers

Hello again Bermondseyboy
I have a couple of present day photos of Lucey Road and wondered if you can help in identifying which one is the correct original location of the Lord Palmerston pub. I don't want to post them as they are not historical but can I send them via email to you pls?
cheers

Hi Frankie

Recieved you photo's thanks.
The present day photo's have changed so much, its hard to get my bearings?
I dont think it was at the rouel road end.If you look at your photo of the Palmerston, i think Lucey Road run off to the right and Linsey Road run to the left, the position of the Camera may have been  from the railway arches looking straight down Lucey Way.
I hope this makes sense, its getting a bit complicated.

The best person for this job is the Paperboy, has he is more familiar with the area as he delivered papers around Lucey Road.

Hopefully if he reads these posts he will be able to pinpoint the exact postion.
I have put your other picture on site, you never know someone might recognise it.

Lord Palm eh!? I did my homework in there when I was studying for my A-level in 1966/7. The area was in the throes of being cleared and the pub was very quiet so I'd go along with my geography and geology books and write essays with the books spread along the bar in the saloon.

If you were walking along Linsey Street, starting at Southwark Park Road, the flats would be on your left and on the right would be terraced houses in the midst of which was "Sheila's" the newsagent and sweetshop at number 31, next to Joe Halpin's cooper's yard.

Carry on walking until you reach the corner with Lucey Road. Ahead of you would be be the arch leading to St James' Road .. on your left would be part of Lipton's yard and on your right .. on the corner.. at number 45 to 47 Lucey Road would be the Lord Plamerston.

Go to here for a map - the Lord Palm was on the South East corner of the junction of Linsey Street and Lucey Road

Hi Paperboy

Thanks for that, the Map you attached is great, much easier to locate where the Palmerston was.
The area has changed so much over the years it's difficult to recognise the place.
I'm sure Frankie will be happy with the result but will be a little disappointed if he goes to visit the area.
