Thanks Autofyrsto (is that Mr or Mrs?)

That is so interesting. I remember that Harry was quite short in stature as was his wife. I never knew her name. He always wore a grey work jacket when he was cutting hair.He had a watch chain to the pocket. I believe it also may have held his silver medal. Rose was of exactly the same stature as Harry so they made an ideal couple. I seem to remember that Rose usually wore a flowery patterned housecoat and often came into the shop from the back to talk to Harry.

The barbers shop was just a stones throw from Rotherhithe Underground (subway) station which was only three stations from Whitechapel. So it sounds as though the Stepney connection is correct.

If I remember any other snippets then I will be in touch.

Here is one photo of Harry's family at Southend. I suppose it is on the beach. The back identifies the twins, Becky and Mary, at left. I suspect the woman is Harry's wife, Rose (nee Cyprus), and that the girl at right is their other daughter, Sarah, although the back does not say.  It says "Dad was taking this snapshot", so I guess the empty chair is Harry's. I suppose this would be some time in the early 1930s.

Does the woman look like Harry's wife?

Hi there

I also remember the old barber shop.  I used to go there in the early 50s.  The shop  was at the top end of Albion Street and like you said he always put his own lotion on my hair. Smashing old boy but my nan always thought that the rats had got to my hair.  Happy days

Yes I remember going there, the fags, the people waiting for there turn.He would put a board across the arms of the chair for me to sit on, as us kids were too short and the chair was not ajustable at least not to suit us.I'm sure it had a funny sounding name like Menditters? but not sure, maybe someone will know?I hated it to, especially when my mates spotted me, always caused a laugh.Bermondseyboy

I can remember going to a Menditta's Barbers on the corner of Monnow Road and Lynton Road in the late 1940's. I was friendly with the owner's son, Peter Menditta. He went to the English Martyrs RC school, though I never knew where that was.

"Old Man" Menditta was very Italian and spoke with a heavy accent. I remember he had a hot towel heater, and also used to do shaves with a cutthroat razor, as well as "singeing" of the hair. A short back and sides cost 6 old pence - a tanner.

Hi Curly
I believe there were two barbers by the name of Mendetta, I lived in Lynton Road and can remember the mandettas on the corner of Monnow Road my Mum used to take me there for the famous short back and sides, I can remember the family including Mario who I think was the youngest brother.

The second was in Grange road opposite the original Bacons School. Alf was the owner he must have been the cheapest barber in the mid 60s half a  crown comes to mind but what a haircut shame about the Pashner colone!!!!!!!! it stank.
Here was my first intro to hair singing another stink when I first saw this I thought the blokes hair was going up in  flames!!!!!

Hi all
I do remember both Mendittas shops but we used to have our hair cut in Long Lane, just past the little park there.
I can't remember what it was called but my three brothers had short back and sides and I had a cut and shape.

I also had my teeth done at Dobsons but earlier than that I had teeth out in the Solarium in Grange road, (we used to call it the clinic).  That awful rubber mask that smelt terrible and the feeling of being suffocated until you went right out.  What barbaric treatment we endured in those days, but I still think of them as good old days.
Cheers

Hi Linda,

I had also my teeth done at the Solarium as a child in the 1950's. I must have been about eight or nine years of age and every visit resulted in another filling! A bit of a money making enterprise I think. It was hard because I remember that they wouldn't let my mother sit in with me. As you say, barbaric times we endured.

I use to have to go to the solarium,in Grange road, in the 50`s... as then it was the school ( Galleywall ) dentist...I used to attach myself to the railings and my mum used to get the "commisionaire" to help pull me off.......then i would elect to use the stairs instead of the lift......the dentist was tall and thin ( wore round glasses) and his assistant was short and fat........I remember the drill being an assortment of pulleys and wheels (lol)...I had a couple of teeth PULLED there and after the gas was sick all the way home on the bus.

Happy days !!

My Mum took me to the Solarium to have some fillings done, that large waiting area was full of crying and screaming children, it really put the fear put the fear of God in me. When it was my turn they must have had student dentists for I was surrounded by about six people in masks, when they tried to put the gas mask on me I fought them of.
My poor Mum it must have been worse for her. In the end she took me to the emergency clinic somewhere near Westminster.
In fairness to The Solarium we were very lucky to have it, it was the first of its kind in the country, remembering it was established in the 30s before we had the National Health.

Your right Rod,
We were very lucky to have it. When you think of the kids it must have helped who had TB, and the Baby clinic was marvellous, we got National Dried milk, orange juice and vitamin drops from there.  It was not only the babies who had their share of those.
