Can anyone remember taking the washing to the Bagwash that used to be collected by Maxwell Laundry I believe the laundry used to be in Long Lane.

I had to take the washing bag to the shop by 7am to get the first collection which was back by lunch time and if you missed this collection it was a late afternoon redelivery or perhaps the next day.

Lots of people used the wash house behind Bermondsey Baths and before my mother returned to work  like us used the old built in copper in the house with a grate and fire beneath to heat the water. The only washing machine was the human one your mother

Thanks for the picture of the Maxwell laundry I have not been down Long Lane for some time now the whole place has changed.

I as a kid used to take the laundry bag to the shop in Dunton Road for the early morning collection

Those were the Days!

Hi Joe

Yep i remember very well draggin the bagwash on a sunday morning, it was bad enough having to take ours but sometimes had to take nans as well. It seemed to take forever to walk from Harold Estate up Webb St and all the way up through Rossy Street. I know i was envious of the people that had old pushchairs/prams to carry theirs on.

In Guinness Buildings the bagwash man used to come round with a van.  He used to shout "bagwash" and all the sash windows would be opened and great big bags of washing would fall to the ground ready for him to collect.  I remenber going past Maxwell when I was little. All that steam and machinery and noise. It used to scare me and I used to have nightmares about the place. I still remember them now!

Our bagwash man used to come round the flats on Arnold estate as well. I always wanted my mum to use Maxwells in Long Lane because I thought it sounded posh.  I remember going swimming down Southwark Park open air swimming pool with the only bath towel in the house until the bagwash came back and someone threw me in the pool with the bath towel , it got soaked and I got a clump when I got home.

Hello Sheila, Yes I  am one of the Vince's  We lived at 127 and the other Vince's were Micheal David and Graham who lived at 137  ( no relation )

The toffee apple man did have the biggest feet and looking back he was the dirtiest looking creature wasn't he ?. Do you remember Big fat Joe  on the Reindeer ice cream van as well. We were only allowed to play out until he came round at 8 o clock. Lovely man though would always find a broken beer lolly for you if you didn't have a tanner.

How's your brother Ronnie?  He was my brother Keith's mate  but sadly Keith died a couple of years ago.   How mamy of you is there ? I can't remember.

I don't live in London any more but I go down regular to visit my husbands family and a visit to the pie shop.
