old places in Bermondsey and Southwark
The photo was taken at the opening of the slide in 1921. It was donated by Arthur Carr the chairman of Peak Freans. It was made by W.J.Dixon and Sons of Blue Anchor Lane. Mr Carr is the man with the long coat in the middle of the photo.
The old slide that was paid for by the Carr family ("owners/founders" of Peek Frean's) has long gone. There is now a new block of flats on the St James Road, blocking the view of the church (and where the slide was). Another little part of our history gone.
(Edit: PS Whoops, didn't see post above on the next page!)

Do you, or anyone else remember a sign on the gates to the yard, which said, "J Mullins Ltd".? I also have and old brochure from Barrow Hepburn which has some old photos of the tanery, happy to copy and forward to anyone interested.

Hi jimmika
We used to live in Frean Street from 1963-1970.
We lived at number 9 which was a pre fab and was built after the old houses were pulled down.
Did your family live in the old houses or the pre fabs?
I loved the slide in St. James's Park too!
I remember the 'parky', she was always telling us off because we always tried to sneak onto the slide when it was closed and we used to climb up the slide instead of using the stairs!
Remember those ropey old slide mats, they were rough and smelly!
hi bermondseygel no they lived in the old houses me nan used to drink in the rising sun its gone now hey we was all ruff an smelly
the last time i saw the slide i think it was a bit burnt remember it was wood an there was no parky to look after it in the last few years an then it was gone!

Oi...speak for yourself! LMAO!!!
I remember The Rising Sun...I used to be friends with the landlords daughter/kids????
I remember the living space upstairs in The Rising Sun was massive and one of the rooms was empty apart from the fibreglass side panel of an old juke box so we (me and the landlords kids) took it to a bomb site at the end of Frean Street which had a big crater and we used the panel as a sledge to slide down the hill made by the crater! Lol.
Happy days!
Hi
Were the people who ran the Rising Sun called Albert and Edee and was their daughter called sylvia. My uncle Wally Hook was neighbours with them and also worked in the Rising Sun. Did you know Wally.
Hi thecustomsignco
I was only a kid myself (about nine or ten years old) and I don't remember any of the names of the kids or the people who ran The Rising Sun pub but the name Wally Hook sounds familiar...maybe my dad knew him????
Sadly my dad died in 2003 so there's no way for me to find out but do you know if your uncle Wally knew my dad...Harry Longworth?
Hi Bermondsey Girl
Spoke to you before my dad knew your uncle Jimmy Longworth through boxing. My mum Claire Hook was Wally Hooks sister. We worked at the Rising Sun as the barman for quite a long time. He used to live in Webster Street and he might of been a barman at the New Condorde pub which Albert and Edie ran before they had the Rising Sun. Its a shame you can't ask them because it seems like they know your dad as well and they must have know Claire and Fred Conroy. Good speaking to you again
