I have a feeling Billy Wells was the boxer that sold " White Horse Oils " in East Lane market on a sunday morning after the war. Can anyone else remember this boxer ?
hi bermondseygirl
the answer to that is no but having said that , the family tree seems very grey we are going to belgium early next year to find my great grandfathers grave in ghent to try and find out who was his next of kin. do you know anybody who went to creadon road school my brother in law went to paragon school and they were from woolworth, a bit more about me i lived in the finish ph lynton road and the ol man used to to run the transport stop for long distance drivers, every saturday mourning we used to go to grange road baths and afterwoods we went to the bakers next door and got a chunk of bread pudding and went over the road to the park and devoured it . i have so many memories i would be here all day but i need to clear the snow
regards george

Hi,Fosney,...i think you may mean Ted Smith, the Ex Boxer that used to sell oils, and had a Guess Your Weight pitch Down East Lane In the Fifties.....?????There was a Gents shop at the Walworth road end of the Market called Fox's,and he had pictures of almost every British Boxer, and other World Champions, usually with himself in the picture, plastered all over the Shop.B.K.
Hi Fosney,Bombadier Billy Wells, was also the First "Gongman" for the J Arthur Rank opening titles of his films...then it was taken over by Phil Nieman...Useless bit of info but there you go lol B.K.I have a picture of him,but cant find out how to post it on ...

Its cropped up in a few posts..But the old boxer who sold white horse oils in East lane was TOMMY NOBLE. DEFINITELY..........
Bermondsey Billy wells who was on tour in California in 1925 and was winning he's fights and climbing the us boxing table, now there was 2 Billy Wells in this era Bombardier Billy Wells heavyweight from mile end london should not be confused with Bermondsey Billy Wells a welterweight boxer and world class at that. Right Bermondsey Billy Wells was after the world welterweight champion Mickey Waler, the fight was on 1926 in Chicago. Al Capone yes the well known gangster of chicago step in and meet up with Billy Wells and guess what Billy did not show for the fight, it must have been something Al said!. what a embarrasing time for boxing in the USA.
