Riley Road School
yes i was one who moved from Monnow rd i remember Hussey but mr bell was good when you got him speaking on a certain subject he would talk through the whole lesson he usedf to teach math he was a horror in a bad mood
Hi Purleronnie, Were you related to Angus Urqucart who went to TBS, when I was at school, I think he married a girl called Fuller. Regards Les
Hi Les , Yes he was my Brother-in-Law , he married my Sister, but they got divorced years ago.
Sadly , my Sister died last year.
Strange , i never knew he went to TBS. but it's got to be the same person (he had loads of Brothers)
His surname is actually 'Urquhart' , but don't worry , everybody spells it wrong HaHa!!.
I suppose he must have been 5-7 years older than me.
Purpleronnie.
Purpleronnie, I have just realised by talking to my wife you are distantly related to her by marriage, her uncle was Bill Fuller married to Alice, had two kids Rosie and Billy, she asked are you Freddie Fuller's boy and your sister's name was Anne, you used to live in Peter Butler House at Dockhead, and her uncle on her Dad's side was Georgie Saunders lived on the same landing but the opposite end., She could go on for ever Charlie Fuller your dad's brother use to live off Southwark Park Road on the Manor Estate. Regards Les
Hit it on the nail.
Yes , you are right on every account.
That's what's good about this site.
Actually , i saw George at my cousins (Billy) 80th Birthday a couple of years ago.
In the old days , when i was little , they all used to drink together, The Fullers, The Radleys, The
Saunders , The Welsteads (Not sure if i spelt that right - but it was Lou & Jim + Kids).
Sadly , All the Mums and Dads are now deceased, but i still see most of my cousins regularly.
I myself , now live in Northumberland Heath , near Barnehurst Kent. The only person i know who still lives in Bermondsey is Rosie (Billy's sister).
Incidentally i actually still work in Riley Road (dead opposite the old school).
Small world.
Purpleronnie.
Purpleronnie My wifes name as you can see is Eileen was Saunders before we got married, we have been together since she was 13 and I was 14, so we more or less grew up together, she was one of Rosie's bridesmaids when she got married. Yes they all use to drink together, in the Simon Tanner in Long Lane, Eileen's mum use to play the piano and sing her name was Nell Saunders (used to be Radley) and Eileen's Dad was Jim he also use to sing. Oh what happy days and the parties. Regards Les PS Yes Rosie is the only one still living in Bermondsey
Hi Les and Eileen.
Yes , spent many a time sitting on the step outside The Simon's Tanner with my lemonade and packet of crisps. Incidently i've just found out from Kim (Rosie's daughter) that it was actually Jim (Eileen's brother ) at Billy's 80th , I'm terrible for names HaHa!!. Kim also sends her regards.
Yeah i also remember the Parties in Meakin Estate , brilliant times.
Out of interest , on this site somewhere , Steve (Bermondseyboy) has posted a Video titled ' We was all one ' about Bermondsey life , Eileen might recognise some of the people in the Pubs (Marigold, etc) also if she looks carefully Kim is also in it , in the Harvest festival bit when she was at Bacon School.
Nice hearing from you.
Ron (Purpleronnie)
HI Ron, I was going to mention it was Eileen's brother you saw at Billy's 80th. also did you know that Billy & Doreen was famous amongst the family and friends for their Rock & Roll jiving at the parties, sadley nobody do's it anymore. Another titbit you may not know your ex brother in law Angus brought the whole of TBS to a halt, because he telephoned the police to say a bomb had been planted within the school, not very funny now but at the time it hilarious. Also about the film Eileen watched it, and picked out lots of old faces from Meakin Estate and Tower Bridge Road, but will watch it again to see if she can spot Kim. When you see Kim please give her our regards, and hope Rosie is keeping well and healthy. Eileen must try and get up to see Rosie sometime, because she was so good to Eileen's mum. I remember Riley Road being taken up mostly by The Metal Box Co., I can't imagine you working for them. By the way Jimmy lives in Old Road,Crayford not far from you. Nice hearing from you too. Les & Eileen
Hi Again,
I remember one party at Meakin Est when Billy turned up dressed only in Balloons , although i think he may have had underpants on , but not sure , as he ran out because we kept busting them . Great times.
Also remember a party we had at our house (Peter Butler) when Big Bill drank a lot of 'Russian Stout' that i bought and got totally drunk which was unusual as he could drink like a horse , it was very funny as he was falling all over the place, but it was still a great Knees up. Happy days.
Will pass the message onto Kim . Rosie is still going strong , i'm seeing her and Kim in a couple of weeks time for a get together.
As you probably know , Metal Box Co is no longer there , i actually work for the Pipe Center which is dead opposite the old school. Ony 2.5 years to go before i retire. (Hooray).
I knew Jimmy lived in Crayford but i didn't know where.
All the best.
Ron
Hi Lennypat here, .... re.. Miss Hamner, I dont remember her, I do remember a Mrs Brewer I think she was Jones's Secretary? On another note...who remembers 1966 world cup? There was a factory in Berrmondsey st that printed World cup willie stickers...... We knicked some from the factory back door, and stuck them over anything that stood still. Cars..houses..street signs, everywhere....It got so bad it were mentioned in assembly by Jonesey who insisted it had to stop...I wish I had kept some, they would be worth a fortune now .....but there you go, if only.
