School Harvest Festival
School Harvest Festival.
(no sound)
By the looks of the Badges it could be Bacon's School.
Not sure about the Church? but could be St Mary Magdalene's Bermondsey Street
The Camera Man picked on one of the Boys who seems to be a little shy, if not a little angry?
Could this be someone you know?
Bacons School it is. I recognise Barbara Parker at 1.42 the one with the light hair
I cannot tell you when it is but where. St Mary Madgelen Church Bermondsey Street. We were all from Pages Walk and there were more people upstairs in the balcony. The down stairs was interspersed with 5 and 6th year Prefects to keep the order. At the time Mr Ing was the Headmaster and Mervyn Wilson( I think) was the Vicar. I can tell you that Our Science Master was Bernard Leamann, Maths Was Ronald Razey, Miss Page was English, Lil Davenport was Geography and Dep Head, Tim was the PE master (always handy with a plimsoll) Owen was Head of Maths. Our French master was also our Careers Officer and I remember his stories of when he was a prisoner of war in Japan. Mrs Mendham was History and I will try to remember more later
Paul Neville
Wow! Thanks for that, what a great indepth review, what a memory.
Some of the faces looked familiar to me but i could not put a name to them.
I never made it to Bacon, I went straight to Paragon, but i knew a few kids around that went there, one was my Brother, Billy Rogers, then he moved from Bacon and joint Paragon.
Paragon Was that not one leg Logan. The headmaster?.. And did you not have a swimming pool on the grounds. We thought we had a great school but ............
No swimming pool at least not when I was there?
I fear that if we did there would have been a lot of drowned kids floating about? and a few Teachers.
As for the Headmaster, as far as I know he had two legs, one to kick us up the backside with.
Can't remember his name.
I will have to ask my Brother next time I see him, to see if he can remember his name.
My cousin, known to one and all as 'Kipper', went to Paragaon. I was at Bacon's when it was in Pages Walk. I remember our twice a year trips to Bermondsey Church when Bill Skelton was vicar. One trip was Harvest Festival and the other was Christmas. I can recall standing at the lectern one year, reading the lesson to the whole school from the bible. The school and church were certainly Bacon's and St Mary Magdalen but from an era later than mine.
Wilf Ing was head in my day. Miss Irving was deputy head and head of History but later replaced as deputy head by Lil Davenport, head of Geography as Nev recalls. Mike Owen (Maths) was known as Gerry. Charlie Pullen was French and Careers. Bernie Lehmann (Science) used to hold some wild parties at his home in Catford - I went to one. Vic Hosking and a Mr Johnson were woodwork and metalwork respectively. In my first year at Bacon's the wood and metal shops weren't ready so we had to go to the old school in Rolls Road. Audrey Milsom was Home Economics (cooking) but I can't recall the needlework teacher's name. we called her 'Min' after the woman in 'The Rag Trade'. Gerda Mendham was our English teacher, she was Czech and was a WW2 concentration camp survivor. She lived in Hampstead. I do recall Miss Paige as the English teacher in my latter years. Jim Hooper was school caretaker - without him nothing worked, not that he ever seemed to do anything!
I've forgotten Tim's surname (PE) but do recall that we loaded his car boot (Consul mk2) with the school flower tubs so that the front wheels barely touched the ground. Happy days!
Hey Paperboy
Tim Ricks was the pe teacher. Audrey Milsom fancied Ron Razey the maths teacher and she always had a lunch for him in the domestic science room. He started the camera club and had the darkroom built. Barry Dyer of Albin fame was the head boy when I went there and Christine was the head girl. I have some great photos of Bernies party's in Lewisham. I set up the disco and the lights. Then there was 64 Brightsfield road where they continued. He had a dog called Gipsy. Bernhard passed away last year in Barbados. Sorry if that brings bad news to people but at least it is final. I still to not know where his ex wife mary is. Girda Mendham lived in Hampstead and we had some great time at her place. Do you remember who was our sexy pottery teacher?. I will try and dig out the photos I have
Thanks for the memories. BTW I now own several apartments in the Bacons School How sad is that??!!
I think I remember this, I do remember one year we went to St Mary Madgelen Church Bermondsey Street and we were filmed singing Jerusalem. I remember Mr Owen and Miss Page, or was it Paige?
I also remember one assembly when we were told that she had died, very sad day as she was a great teacher.
Does anybody remember Mr Ing caning, I think it was all the 4th and 5th years for messing about duering assembly.
Tom
I definitley remember getting caned by Mr Ing along with about 6 or 7 other lads (one of them had nothing to do with it!) for mucking about on the train from South Bermondsey to London Bridge. But this was in his office. I think if teachers caned people in asembly now they would end up on some sort of register. I also remember the harvest festival being filmed but they only showed about a minute of it on TV .
Sorry he didn't cane them in assembly, we all lined up along the corridor outside his office, a couple of lads refused as they hadn't taken part.
Tom
Bacon's at Grange Road had 2 Owens Michael and Norman - we would call them Mo and No.
Mr Parfit was my first teacher at Bacon's - he never ever used the cane as far as I know. He would dance on the desks to grab your attention! Great Bloke
Definatley Bacon's,god it bought back some memories, does anyone know what year this was filmed? As for the church,it could be one of three that we were often dragged to,St James,Southwark cathederal or the small church along side the Delaford road end, can't remember the name though.I'm pretty certain it's St James.
i was there when mr ing took over from mr binger he walked in wearing a black cloak and mortice on his head even though it was a boys only school then grange road 2oo of us then the assemble hall shook with fright other teachers were mr french mr cash mr king mr commer mr cresswell mr king year 19 45 to1951 some of the lads the crawleys tom clarke dave barry j lake a jennings t bridger the moores r teather t waters claydens r francis the honeymans b bowles d philips a wade g shrive and one of the best story tellers i knew tommy hicks now known as steele with brother collin in a lower class
Delaford rd ,, there was a piano on the right side of the assembly hall pupils used to sit on the floor,it was a great place to sit because the teachers on stage could not see you,,Mr Ing spotted a few pupils muttering under thier breath and leaped off stage with his new walking stick ,grabbed the ring leader with the crook of his walking stick by the neck ,, just like a cartoon we used to watch on tv ,, it was so funny , i cant remember if he cained the ring leader on the spot , but the usual method was to cain pupils in his office , Hoskins was the hardest cainer along with Robbo in pages walk ,on that note as a reference ,, does anyone remeber the metal work teacher nicknamed Satan ?? lol
