Looking for info on ALFRED EDWARD GODFREY.
These two photos are of ALFRED GODFREY my Grandfather. He was born I believe around the 1885 in again I am guessing here, in Southwark.
He became the Father to my Mother: Ada Elizabeth Page while he was lodging at 313 Lynton Road, Bermondsey from 1914 to 1923 (he also lodged earlier at 297 Lynton Road) when he moved out to ??. He was known as a "Close" friend to my Nan: Ellen Elizabeth Page and was even in the group wedding photo of my parents in 1943.
BUT, my Mother now Mrs Ada Taylor didn't know he ALFRED was her Father and her mother (my Nan) Ellen never told her. Now sadly all have passed away.
We lived in no's 16 & 17 Rock Grove just off the Blue which was directly behind the Railway Tavern in St James Road (now called Rock Grove Way) until we were moved out in 1953 through to redevelopment, to the wilds of South Ockendon, Essex.
Question is:-
- doe's anyone know of him?
- is he in anyones family tree?
- doe's anyone recognize Alf in these photos or have similar ones, (I have others)?
- his wife was Helen Elizabeth Tinsley
- did he Alfred & Helen have two children 1. Helen Beatrice 2. Ronald Alfred Godfrey?
- did he and his wife move to Canada in the late 40's or early 50's?
I know this is longer than a long shot to come up with any answers But I must ask.

Hi Alantay
I have had a quick look at the 1901 Census.
I'm sure you would have done this already but just in case.
I found 2 Alfred Godfrey's
1. b.1885 Madron Street, just off the Old Kent Road
2. b.1888 East Street
I guess you have been in touch with Richard Cottrell who has a Alfred Godfrey in his Family Tree.
I know this is not much help but I will keep trying and maybe some Member or soon to be Members on the Forum may be more helpful.
Good Luck in your search

Good afternoon Bermondseyboy,
Thank you for your interest and yes I have been in contact with Richard Cottrell via Genes Reunited. And that is as far as that went, he has no knowledge of Alfred. After all anyone who knew him must have gone up those giant apples and pears in the sky. I think he had a cunning plan & left for Canada perhaps with a second wife around the start of the 50's but -- ?
The idea of starting this FORUM for Bermondsey is a brillant one. Well done. Now all this forum needs is for it to be publicized. Have the local & national newspapers been given any copy to inform their readers?
Kindest regrads
Alan
Greetings from the great state of Alabama,
What a great site so far, I am very impressed. I am looking for any one related to the following families of the Bermondsey area.
1. Mortimer
2. Green
3. Perdy
4. Hitchcock
5. Hoare
Thank you for any help.
Hi Eevers
I bet the weather over there is better than it is here, cold and wet.
I have been trawling the internet for these family's and yes there are quite a few listed in Bermondsey.
Is there anymore information you can get to narrow this down, ie. are these Family's connected to each other?
Do you know which parts of Bermondsey they may be from? Places they may have lived?
What about Christian Names of family members, any clue to narrow these family's down?
Are you a member of one of these Family's.
Hopefully one of our Members or soon to be Members may be able to help.
I will keep looking, just in case I find something.
In the mean time good luck with your search.

Hi Alan,
I have posted this picture elsewhere, but it might be more relevant here for you. As you can see it's a group picture outside the Railway Tavern taken I assume around 1920. There are two faces that I think resemble your Grandfather: fourth from right & fourth from left in the back row. Have alook and see what you think. PS My grandad is in the middle row.

i think its jonnie kendell worked for evening standard family moved to watford

I am looking for anyone connected to the Wheble family? I am trying to complete my family tree and would welcome any responses.
In 1954 I passed my eleven plus at a school called [I think St Josephs] in Paradise Street next to the catholic church [I think St Peters and the Guardian Angels] Only myself and two girls passed and our reward was a trip to see the boat race. We stood on the banks of the Thames and suddenly the boats came into view. Sadly it was all over within a couple of minutes before they disappeared. The two girls in question were MARY LEDGER and PAMELA DOBSON. It would be great to hear from anyone who knows of them. Many thanks MICHAEL
HI Eevers
My dad had a friend with the surname Purdy who came out of Bermondsey. I believe he moved to Beckenham or Sydenham area of London. Had a son who was a disc jockey. This was in the 50s. Dad always called him Purdy and he was in the building trade. Dad worked with him. My dad was a roofer and worked for McQuires in Bermondsey.
